T&T's Dylan Carter lined up in the men's 100m freestyle A-Final at the Pan Am Aquatics Centre last night (7.20pm) in the hopes of landing this country's first medal at the Pan American Games which continued in Toronto, Canada yesterday.
The 19-year-old Carter was carded to swim from lane seven in the eight-man final against Canadian swimmers Santo Condorelli and Yuri Kisil, Argentina's Federico Grabich, Brazil's Marc Chierighini, Suriname's Renzo Tjon-A-Tjoe, Christian Quintero of Colombia and Matheus Santana of Brazil.
Carter was third fastest in heat one in 49.29 seconds to trail Canadian duo, Santo Condorelli (48.88) and Yuri Kisil (49.07). The trio of Argentina's Federico Grabich (48.60), Brazilian Marc Chierighini (48.92) and Suriname's Renzo Tjon-A-Toe (49.47) from heat two and Colombian Christian Quintero (49.07) and Brazil's Matheus Santana (49.52), the top two finishers from heat three, were the other qualifiers for the gold medal splash.
In the Men's Trap qualification round, T&T's Anthony Maraj's poor run continued with rounds of 13, 20, and 16 to add to his first day scores of 18 and 5 for a total of 72 points and 28th position from a field of 29.
In volleyball, Ayanna Dyette and Malika Davidson were beaten by Argentines Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug 11-21, 13-21 in their Pool D opener in 38 minutes.
Up next for the T&T women is an encounter with experienced Mexican duo, Martha Revuelta and Bibiana Candelas today (Wednesday) from 4.30pm.
The men's hockey suffered an 11-0 mauling from powerhouse Argentina which was led by a hat-trick from Luca Vila, in the 29th, 30th and 34th minute.
Gonzalo Peillat broke down the T&T defense in the 26th minute and an avalanche followed with a quick double from Vila, to lead 3-0 at the half.
Vila then completed his treble in the 34th and Matias Paredes added another on the 37th to stretch the lead to 5-0 at the the end of the third period.
T&T buckled under the pressure of the South Americans who added six more goals through Nicolas Della Torre (42nd), Agustin Mazzili (55th), Peillat (57th), Facundo Callioni (57th & 60th) and Jaoquin Menini (59th).
Tomorrow, the hockeymen come up against Cuba.
Kelly Arrindell was tenth in the fourth women's laser race to carry her net points tally to 21 and ninth spot overall.
Arrindell had an impressive start with a second placed finish behind Uruguay's Dolores Moreira on Sunday, but then slipped down the table with finishes of 12th and ninth in races two and three on Monday while events five and six carded for yesterday as well were delayed.
Olympian Andrew Lewis stayed in the hunt for a top three finish as he ended yesterday's fourth men's laser race in joint sixth with Brazilian Robert Scheidt with 17 net points.
Lewis started with a disappointing tenth place finish on Sunday but rebounded to place fourth and sixth on Monday in the next two races followed by seventh yesterday.
Like the women's event, the fifth and sixth races carded for yesterday were delayed with competition expected to resume today from 11.35 and 1.35 pm respectively.
On Monday night, men's beach volleyball pair, Daneil Williams and Fabien Whitfield went under in their Pool D round-robin opener to Puerto Ricans, Roberto Rodriguez and Erick Haddock, 12-21, 15-21 in 32 minutes. Today from 11am, Whitfield and Williams come up against Chilean brothers, Marcos and Esteban Grimalt, who swept aside El Salvador's Carlos Escobar and David Vargas in their opener 21-11, 21-12.
In soccer, T&T Under-23 were handed a 4-0 drubbing by Uruguay.
The South Americans opened the scoring in the sixth minute through defender Fabricio Formiliano Duarte and fellow defender Federico Ricca Rostagnal doubled the advantage in the 20th before Nicolas Albarracin Basil made it 3-0 in the 31st.
Any hopes the Zoran Vranes-coached T&T squad had of finding a way back in the second faded when defensive midfielder, Alvin Jones, the brother of senior team utility player Joevin Jones was issued a straight red card in the 59th and ten minutes later Uruguay added a fourth goal via Brioan Lozano Aparicio.
The other T&T athlete in action on Monday night was Marissa Dick, who ended 14th overall in the Women's Allround Gymnastic Artistic final with a combined score of 51.250 from the four apparatuses.
On the floor competition Dick scored 12.600 while in the others she tallied 12.400 (Uneven bars); 13.450 (Vault) and 12.800 on the Balance Beams. Canada's Ellie Black won gold with 58.150 points while USA's Madison Desch (57.450) got silver and Brazilian Flavia Lopes (57.050), bronze.
Last night, at the CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium, the national Under-23 women's team buoyed by their 2-2 draw against Argentina on Saturday night come up against Colombia, 1-0 winners over Mexico in their second match from 8.35 pm.
