T&T's quartet of Rondel Sorrillo, Keston Bledman, Emmanuel Callender and Dan-Neil Telesford came within one hundredth of a second of earning the country's seventh medal at the Pan American Games when it placed fourth in the Men's 4x100m final at the CIBC Athletics Stadium in Toronto last night.
The team crossed the line in 38.69 to finish agonizingly behind the bronze medal winning Brazil's 38.68. The hosts Canada took the gold in a national record of 38.06 while USA gained the silver in 38.27.On Friday night, the team had stopped the clock at 38.52 to win its semifinal despite both Barbados (38.65) and Dominican Republic (38.67) setting new national records. T&T was lined up for two other relay finals last night as its campaign at the Games came to a close.
The team of Janeil Bellille, Ramona Modeste, Alena Brooks and Sparkle Mc Knight were to enter the Women's 4x400m final while at 10:10 pm, 400m silver medallist Machel Cedenio along with Jarrin Solomon, Renny Quow and Lalonde Gordon were set to take lane eight in the 4x400m final.
T&T's men's hockey team took advantage of a weakened Cuban side to win its 7th-8th place playoff 13-0 at the Pan American Games in Toronto yesterday. Cuba's squad had been cut in half when eight of its players defected from the group prior to the match. Taking the field with just eight men, the Cubans were slaughtered by a full strength T&T unit which showed them no mercy.
Midfielder Mickel Pierre and substitute forward Kiel Murray led the attack with a hat trick each while midfielder Dillet Gilkes and defender Jordan Reynos managed two apiece. Also entering the scorebooks were Stefan Mouttet, Kristien Emmanuel and Ishmael Campbell.Meanwhile, cyclists Emile Abraham placed eighth out of 42 riders in the Men's Road Race, finishing the grueling 165km course in a time of 3:46:35.
