Young people, particularly those downtrodden by the circumstances of life need to be encouraged and empowered to move past their situation and embrace their greatest potential. So said Malissa Patterson, the managing director of Option1events.
The first decision that Patterson made as a young entrepreneur almost three years ago, was to host a nonprofit youth programme specifically for youth residing in children's homes called–Be the Star that You Are Youth Programme. Patterson is supported by creative director, Akiba Edwards, and sound technicians Selwyn Patterson and Tyler Livingstone.
Together, over the last three years, they have hosted Rainbow Rescue, Sophia House, St Michael's Home for Boys and St Mary's Children's Home. These youth have been engaged in what would be considered a one-day boot camp for life, with topics that include self-esteem, time management, entrepreneurial skills, image and etiquette, sporting activities relating to life characteristics and more.
Through these sessions and with the assistance of Ah Peelin' Feelings Theatre Group, Patterson said they have see youth move from quiet at the beginning to being excited to offer their opinions and talents later on.
"The Be the Star that You Are Youth Programme continues to encourage our young people through the launch of its mini guide–a workbook with our topics that anyone can use in sessions that span individual to corporate as our topics affect life generally."The event was held last weekend at Nalis, Corner Hart and Abercromby Streets, Port-of-Spain.
