T&T senior women's hockey team duo, Stephanie Whiteman and Dana-Lee De Gannes were both among the goals as Lock Haven University thrash William & Mary 3-0 in their Atlantic 10 Conference season opener on Friday night.The Trincity-born Whiteman, a Junior, scored on a penalty stroke late in the first half to put LHU up 1-0 after she had already made three defensive saves to keep the game tied 0-0 at Charlotte E Smith Field.
Maraval-born De Gannes put LHU up 2-0 in the 61st minute when she deflected home a shot from Whiteman, who was also her teammate at local club Notre Dame, while Rachel Valentine knocked home a Lydia George pass three minutes later.Two days later, Whiteman assisted on her team's first goal in a 2-1 win over Ohio State, to improve to 2-0.
Colleen McCabe opened the scoring with 2:13 left in the first half when she ripped home a penalty corner with Whiteman and Rache Valentine being credited with assists on the play.Ohio tied the game minutes later–and with no time left on the clock in the first half–as Maria Russell knocked home a rebound on a penalty corner attempt. The two teams were tied 1-1 at the break.
Valentine scored her second goal of the season and put Lock Haven up 2-1 in the 56th minute when she redirected a hard McCabe pass into the circle.Whiteman was again a leader on defence and recorded a defensive save in the first half. She already has four defensive saves through two games.
Petit Valley native Tamia Roach, a Freshman is also a member of the team.Following her impressive start to the season, Whiteman, formerly of Bishop Anstey East was named the week's Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) Player of the Week.It's was the first A-10 Player of the Week honours this season as her strong play helped Lock Haven open the season 2-0.
Last season, Lock Haven went 12-8 overall and 6-2 in A-10 play, qualifying for its second straight conference tournament.
