T&T's Jeron Thompson had to settle for winning the men's B-Final in the 50m butterfly event when the fifth Commonwealth Youth Games competition splashed off at the Tuana'imato Sports Facility, Samoa, yesterday.
Thompson touched the wall in 26.23 followed by Lushano Lamprecht of Namibia (26.31) and Browdy Hewison (26.35).
In the morning heats he had a time of 26.19
Yesterday, Thompson returned to the pool and was third in the 50m backstroke B-Final in 28.71 after he clocked 29.01 in the morning heats. Thompson then had the disappointing of being disqualified from heat three of the 100m breaststroke while today he competes in the 50m breaststroke event.
Amira Pilgrim, T&T's other swimmer at the Games was fifth in her women's 50m butterfly B-Final in 29.49 after a 29.32 heats timing, and improved on that showing yesterday when she got third spot in the 100m freestyle B-final in 59.35 after a 59.45 timing in the morning heats.
In the 200m mixed medley where T&T paired with Jamaica, the combination ended in seventh spot.
Manager of the swimming team, Joseph Mc Leod was pleased with the athletes' performance. "I'm pleased with their performance since this the first time the athletes have been exposed to an International event and competitors; prior to this they would have been exposed to regional events such as CCCAN and Carifta. Simple things such as the pool temperature (colder) and smaller starting blocks the athletes must adjust," he stated.
He further described the Commonwealth Youth Games as developmental in nature and helps prepare athletes mentally for the senior multi sporting events.
In athletics, Youth Olympic athlete Akanni Hislop placed second in his heat in a time 10.72 seconds and automatically qualified for the semi-finals.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to an injury during the race and was unable to start the semifinal.
The medical team was able to work with Akanni to ensure that he was fit to run the 200m, however he was disqualified from his heat. Today, T&T's fourth and final athlete at the Games, Akidah Briggs, takes her bow in the 12-women field shot put finals.
