After breaking a record for being the driver of the fastest 4-cylinder car in the United States a couple years ago, Ryan Garcia is set to smash more records when the T&T Automobile Sport Association-sponsored International Drag Night Event is held at the Wallerfield Race Track tonight.
The event will signal a return of international drag racing event in T&T for the first time in seven years. Over 100 local cars and drivers and 10 foreigners from Grenada, Antigua and St Maarten will compete for top honours and attractive cash prizes. However, it will be on the tracks where Garcia and other top drivers will generate all the excitement. Garcia who will be in his super fast SKF Lancer will be featured in the quarter mile distance sprints.
Along with others drivers, he will contest a number of sprint categories such as the 15- seconds, 13-seconds, 12-seconds, 11-seconds, 10-seconds and nine-seconds dash.
Vice president of the automobile association Jamille Ali said he believes the drivers will also attempt to break the eight-seconds and seven-seconds barriers. "But the drivers who will be attempting to do this will be drivers like Garcia and others" Ali said.
Garcia will again be driving his SKF Lancer and will be coming up against Boost Factory, Rug Rat RX-7 which will be driven by Dale Mayers and Rishi Kanick in his car- Rail. T&T will also be represented in the motorbike races through Jinelle Alvarado.
Meanwhile, the International Sports and Cultural Academy (ISACA) and 'D- Biggest Educational, Sporting Technology Inc through its president Fizes Hosein will hand out a number of trophies at tonight's event.
Yesterday Hosein said prizes will be given out for the fastest 6-cylinder car, the fastest 4-cylinder car, the fastest 4-wheel drive, the fastest front wheel drive, the best re-action car, the fastest ET car, best organised team, best female driver, best female rider on motorbike and the fastest motorbike.
Hosein, who in his hey days, was recognised and well respected through-out the Caribbean as a circuit car trainer and marshall as well as defensive driving instructor has called on race drivers and other motorists to avoid the unnecessary racing on the nation's roads.
He said too many lives are being lost on the road ways due to recklessness. He wants all motorists to respect others and take precaution while driving.
