The University of T&T completed the season with a 100 per cent winning record as they brushed aside Arima Hawks 4-2 in the WASA Table-Tennis Invitational Tournament decider at WASA Sports Club, St Joseph on Wednesday night.
Leading the way for the UTT was Kyle Borneo, top local junior Arun Roopnarine and team captain Alaric Humphreys who all won their matches on Table One to inspire the $10,000 title triumph.
However, Borneo did not have things all his way as he was stretched to five sets by former national and Caribbean champion, Lionel Darceuil before he prevailed 16-14, 8-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-8.
Roopnarine and Humphreys then had surprisingly much easier outcomes, 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7 against five-time national champion Reeza Burke, and Anson Wellington, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 respectively for a 3-0 lead.
Davonne Joseph then sealed the victory on Table Two by beating Rawle Parsons 11-9, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10.
Hawks' managed to get consolation wins from Linda Partap-Boodhan 8-11, 11-6, 11-5, 12-10 over former senior women's singles champion Brittany Joseph, and Riad Abasali, 11-3, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10 over Kamal Hunte.
Prior to the final, D'Abadie Youths got the better of Solo Crusaders, 4-3 for third spot, thanks to a deciding doubles win for Edwin Humphreys and Everton Sorzano over kwame Laurence and Terry Corbin, 11-3, 11-9, 11-8.
Earlier on, Haadiy Brooker put D'Abadie 1-0 ahead via his 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8 defeat of Corbin.
However, Anthony Brown outlasted Sorzano 12-10, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8 and Andrew Alexander rallied past Michael Nanton, 11-4, 11-6, 6-11, 9-11, 12-10 to put Crusaders' ahead 2-1.
Humphreys (E) battled past Laurence 16-14, 11-9, 13-11 to get his team level, while Sherdon Pierre fought off Vinoo Maraj 11-8, 6-11, 3-11, 11-8, 13-11 for a 3-2 advantage and within a win of third spot.
But former national women's champion and veteran player Merle Baggoo was in no mood to throw in the towel as she scolded Ronald Williams 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-4 to level the contest yet again, this time at 3-3 to set up the decider, where Sorzano and Humphreys (E) came up trumps for D'Abadie.
