Connection open against Atletico
W Connection have named a 20-man squad for Group One of the preliminary round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship which they will host from today until Sunday at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva.
They open their campaign against Atletico of Dominican Republic from 7.45 pm, one of two matches. In the other game, Inter Moengo Tapoe of Suriname will face Club Sportif Moulien from Guadeloupe at 5.30pm.
The Savonetta Boys will be led by defender Alvin Jones and will comprise nine foreigners including defenders Kurt Fredericks and Gerard Lewis of St Lucia; midfielders Briel Thomas (Dominica), Dimitrie Apai (Suriname), Julani Archibald (St Kitts), Jamal Charles (Grenada), Shirvone St Prix (St Lucia), Anferenee Frederick (Dominica) and Paolo De La Guardia (Panama).
They are fresh from action in the T&T Pro League where they are third on the standings.
Coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier yesterday described the game as very important as it will begin their quest to qualify for the Concacaf Champions League. However Fevrier admitted he does not know anything about his opponents which have topped the first-time pro league in the Dominican Republic.
“I expect they will be a good team because they won in the Dominican Republic but at the same time I always impress upon our players to play, not only for themselves and the team, but also because they will be representing the league and the country at large,” Charles-Fevrier said.
The winner will progress to a final play-off where the top three teams will move on to the Concacaf Champions League.
Connection will play their second match on Friday against Club Sportif Moulien at the same venue and time (7.45pm) before they end their campaign on Sunday against Inter Moengo Tapoe at 6.30pm.
