Fire Services' chase to overtake TSTT as the leader of the Alternative Division in the All Sectors Netball League hit a snag, after the firewomen fell to closest rival Prisons, 34-25, on Tuesday evening at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua.
Both teams are on 10 points after seven rounds of matches with records of five wins and two losses but Prisons hold the edge due to goal difference.
Setting up the win were goal-shooter Anita Pitt Russell with 16 goals off 28 tries and goal-attack Rhonita Williams, who produced 18 in 33 to keep Prisons ahead throughout the 40-minute encounter. The quarter scores read 12-6 in the first period, 20-13 at the half and 28-19 in the third, all in favour of the prison officers.
Cameisha Leslie led Fire's shooting with 19 off 30 while her goal-attack Kynda Richards added six in 11.
In the second match of the double-header, the University of the West Indies (UWI) caused a minor upset when the previously last placed team beat the second-to-last University of the Southern Caribbean (USC), 32-22. Thanks to goal-difference UWI pushes USC into the bottom spot despite both having similar records of one win and six losses for a total of two points in the six-team competition.
It was the shooting of goal-attack Zakiya McKenna with 17 in 37 and goal-shooter Glenda Edwards' 15 off 33 that helped UWI earn the 10-goal victory.
Goal-shooter Carla Victor was the most accurate of all shooters, with 78 percent and topped the scoring but her team was on the losing end.
Today, TSTT will try to stretch its lead to four when it takes on Police in the opening match at 5.30 pm. The unbeaten team in this division has 12 points after six rounds of matches.
