National spin bowler Kavesh Kantasingh and Guyanese cricketer Royston Crandon grabbed five wickets apiece to put PowerGen in command against Jenexcon Tableland at the end of day one in the penultimate (sixth) round of the T&T Cricket Board Three-Day tournament, yesterday.
PowerGen, bowling first at home in Syne Village, Penal bundled Tableland out for 123. Left-arm spinner Kantasingh finished with 5/49, while right arm off break bowler Crandon ended with similar bowling figures snatching 5/50.
Former national Under-19 cricketer Al Small top scored for Tableland with 37, while national youth cricketer Cephas Cooper pitched in with 30. In reply PowerGen closed on 142 without loss, a lead of 19 runs on first innings. West Indies cricketer Evin Lewis is unbeaten on 74 and giving solid support is Videsh Sookhai who is 63 not out.
Nearby at the Wilson Road Recreation Ground in Penal, only 33 overs were possible due to rain between leaders Queen's Park and second placed Clarke Road. Clarke Road closed day one on 117/4 with T&T Red Force batsman Kyle Hope ending on 42 not out off 78 balls, while T&T teammate Yannick Ottley is unbeaten on 22. Earlier in the innings Ottley's older brother Kjorn scored 26.
Bowling for the Parkites, medium pacer Javon Searles grabbed 2/29 in seven overs. The Queen's Park first team is aiming for its third title this season after winning the 50-over competition last Saturday and claiming the NGC T20 tournament earlier in the season. The sixth round matches in the three-day competition continue on Saturday and concludes Sunday.
