A half century by national batsman Jason Mohammed at the PowerGen Ground in Penal yesterday, put the home team in a strong position against Jenexcon Tableland in the sixth round of the T&T Cricket Board Three-Day competition, keeping the race for the title interestingly poised.
Third placed PowerGen seems set for an outright victory today on the final day of round six. PowerGen should close the gap on leaders Queen's Park and second placed Clarke Road as the encounter between the top two teams at Wilson Road Recreation Ground in Penal is heading for a draw.
At the PowerGen Ground, the home team declared on 306/8 in the first innings after starting day two on 142/0. Openers Evin Lewis and Videsh Sookhai could not convert their half centuries into centuries falling for 85 and 66 respectively. Mohammed came to the middle and ensured PowerGen got to an impressive score, cracking 61 to help give his team a lead of 183 runs on first innings. Uthman Muhammad (3/80) and Cephas Cooper (3/53) both grabbed three wickets for Tableland.
In the second innings Tableland continued to struggle closing on 82/5. Spin bowler Kavesh Kantasingh, who has already taken more than 50 wickets this season, has grabbed 2/37. Strassack Sankar snatched 2/27, while Akiel Cooper scored 21 for Tableland. In the first innings Tableland was dismissed for 123.
At Wilson Road not a ball was bowled between Queen's Park and Clarke Road. It is understood that when the covers were removed around lunchtime the wicket was wet due to poor covers forcing the day's play to be abandoned.
