Weight-lifting enthusiast Korrie John emerged as the best of the field at Saturday's National Junior Body-Building and Fitness Championships held at the ballroom at the Cascadia Hotel in St Ann's, Port-of-Spain.
The event which was conceptualised and produced by the T&T Body Builders and Fitness Federation of T&T attracted 35 well prepared athletes in 12 categories.
John proved very convincing, as he flexed his way past fellow challengers Wilfred Kingston, Kevin Cumming and Stephan Endinboro in the men's middleweight category for entrants in the weight class up to 80kgs.
Then he turned his attention to the Classic Body-Building Class where he matched skills against Ishmael Barbour, Bruce Allum and Cumming to successfully take home the overall honour as the strongest junior athlete for 2016.
Meanwhile, Nicole Toussaint hoisted trophy as the strongest female athlete in a small class which featured just two athletes. Marisa Khan-Lutchman was her opponent, but Toussaint, it seemed, possessed the muscular development the panel of expert adjudicators looked for and got.
The award of places by the judges on the night and the views of the mock panel which constituted members of the audience seemed in sync until Krystle Khan beat Cornelia Blackman in the Miss BikiniClass A round of competition.
Patrons openly expressed their dissatisfaction over Khan's win by booing the judges announcement. They maintained this course of action even as her rivals left the staged to allow for the championship pose. It was around this time that a visibly frustrated Susanna Hadad, president of the
TTBBFF took the spotlight and said, "That is something I don't tolerate." The ballroom was silent.
The body-building official continued, "Now, the winner will take her winning pose!"Sport and Youth Affairs Minister Darryl Smith, applauded her stance.
Competition in the Miss BikiniClass B round on the night saw Jenna Amelia DeLeon beat favourite Chrystal Wharwood for the top spot. DeLeon went on to be crowned Miss Bikini Overall, beating Khan, to the audience's delight.
Isaiah Garcia won the Men's PhysiqueClass A round, while Benerdict Calliste was the category champion in the Men's PhysiqueClass B segment, but when they met later on the night's playbill it was the latter athlete that got the judges nod.
Cindy Garcia and Christiana Cassie vied for the Body Fitness (Figure) Open prize, which the former athlete won.
