Aaron Wilson and Catherine Spicer were crowned Under-21 Singles champions when the Solo Junior National Table-Tennis Championships hosted by the Table-Tennis Association of T&T served off at the Central regional Indoor Sports Arena, Saith Park, Chaguanas on Saturday.
In the men's Under-21 final, two-time reigning Caribbean Junior champion and Senior bronze medal winner, Wilson outclassed Luc O'Young 6-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-2 in an all-Carenage Blasters decider.
Earlier, Wilson battled past Joshua Maxwell 11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 12-14, 11-6 while O'Young stunned Arun Roopnarine 13-11, 3-11, 5-11, 11-8, 12-10 in their respective semifinals.
Wilson had a much easier time in the round-robin group phase with straight sets wins over Daniel Henriques (11-3, 11-7, 11-6) and Eammanuel Chunisingh (11-5, 13-11, 11-8) followed by a round-of-16 bye and an 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7 victory in the last-eight against Sarvesh Mungal.
O'Young, meanwhile trounced Shaquille Mitchell (11-6, 11-5, 11-5) and Lamani Clarke (11-7, 11-4, 11-8) in the group series before he ousted Henriques (9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7) and Benoni Daniel (9-11, 12-10, 13-11, 11-7).
The Under-21 Girls was contested vi a round-robin format and Spicer of PowerGen overcame a strong field to emerge with a 4-0 record in the five-player round-robin tournament and with it, the title.
Her victims included former senior national women's champion Brittany Joseph (5-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-9), Monique Cooper (11-6, 11-3, 11-4), Artienea Gregoire (11-5, 11-1, 11-7) and Treasure Haynes (11-3, 11-4, 11-2).
Joseph won her other matches for second spot at 3-1 followed by Gregoire (2-2), Cooper (1-3) and Haynes (0-4).
It was one of two titles won on the day by Spicer as she paired with Sarvesh Mungal to beat Amresh Mungal/Artienea Gregoire 11-2, 11-5, 13-11; Lamani Clarke/Joseph 11-4, 11-6, 11-7 and Emmanuel Chunisingh/Treasure Haynes 11-3, 11-5, 11-1 to claim the Under-21 Mixed Doubles title.
And in the Under-21 Boys Doubles, Roopnarine paired with Clarke to beat Shaquille Mitchell and Benoni Daniel 11-9, 3-11, 11-1, 11-6 in their decider.
In the semifinals, the eventual champions humbled Luc O'Young and Joshua Maxwell 11-7, 11-7, 10-12, 9-11, 14-12 and Mitchell and Daniel overcame Matthew Mootra and Alex Walcott, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.
Brittany Joseph managed to get some redemption though after she teamed up with Fong to beat Spicer/Gregoire (11-3, 11-8, 11-7); Shreya Maharaj/Rayanna Boodhan (11-4, 11-8, 11-3) and Imani Edwards-Taylor/Rebekah Sterling 11-2, 11-1, 11-6 in they Open Girls Doubles series.
In the Under-15 Boys' final: Jesse Dookie battled past Derron Douglas 11-7, 11-7, 9-11, 12-14, 11-5.
Dookie brushed aside Uzair Omardeen 11-7, 11-4, 11-7 and Douglas outlasted Nikoli Barbour-Alexis 11-7, 11-7, 12-14, 10-12, 11-7 in the final-four.
Prior to that, Dookie beat Varen John 11-8, 11-1, 11-4 and Shane Gordon 11-5, 11-2, 11-6 in his round-robin group before he swept past Joshua Moses 11-1, 11-6, 11-8 and N'Kosi Rouse 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 in his two early knockout encounters while Douglas whipped Abraham Francis 11-3, 11-8, 11-4 and Nicolas Lee 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 in his group ahead of his 11-8, 11-2, 11-6 quarterfinal defeat of Dylan Lee.
Among the Girls' Under-15, Chelsea Fong took top honours in the three-player competition after she battled past pre-tournament favorite Maharaj 11-7, 11-13, 13-11, 13-11 and Boodhan 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 for a perfect 2-0 record after Shurja Welch failed to show. Maharaj was second courtesy her 11-4, 11-6, 11-8 win over Boodhan.
In the Boys Under-11, Nicholas O'Young defeated Jamali Mauge 5-11, 11-7, 11-7 for the title In the semifinals, O'Young overcame Liam Canterbury 11-5, 11-7 and Mauge swept past Sachin Ramsumair, 11-6, 11-4.
In the round-robin group staged, O'Young defeated Ramsumair, Yirah Mc Intosh and Samuel Humphreys all in straight sets while Maugle blanked Canterbury and Sameer Ali, 2-0 but was taken to three sets by Vheer Samnarine.
And in the Girls Under-11 competition, Priyanka Khellawan won a five-player round-robin series with defeats of Shenieka Collette (11-7, 11-8), Rebekah Sterling (11-5, 11-3), Imani Edwards-Taylor (11-5, 11-4) and Brianna Solomon (9-11, 13-11, 13-11) for a 4-0 record.
Second was Sterling with a 3-1 mark ahead of Edwards-Taylor (2-2), Solomon (1-3) and Collette, who ended without a victory.
