Baptiste fires Joe Public past Ma Pau

National striker Kerry Baptiste scored a goal in each half as defending champion, bmobile Joe Public came away with a 2-1 win over an unlucky Ma Pau in their second round Digicel Pro League meeting at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya on Saturday night. With the win, the Eastern Lions improved to 19 points from ten matches, 11 adrift of unbeaten leaders, Defence Force which blanked Police 3-0 on Friday. Baptiste, last season’s top goal scorer headed the “Eastern Lions” in front after 16 minutes when he connected with a corner by national team-mate Hayden Tinto to hand coach Derek King the perfect start to the contest. But four minutes later, Joe Public suffered a serious blow when defender Carlyle Mitchell had to taken to hospital on a stretcher after he came out the worst in a clash with Ma Pau forward, Trevin Ceasar.

Mitchell was taken to the nearby St Augustine Medical Hospital and according to team officials, he suffered a broken rib as well as injury to his neck. The injury to Mitchell seemed to throw his team-mates off as Ma Pau took command and had its opponents on the back foot for the rest of the half. In fact, the ‘Casino Boys’ were unlucky not to have drawn level at least before the break as referee Rashby Mc Phie twice waived off confident shouts for penalties by speedy winger, Lester “Corn Curls” Peltier. On the resumption, Ma Pau picked up where they left off with Kevin Molino, Rennie Britto, Shane “German” Calderon and Peltier dominating their oppponents, but without much luck in front of goal.

Against the run of play, Baptiste had a chance to double his team’s tally but he blasted a Yu Hoshide over the bar from the edge of the six-yard box under pressure from defender Keyeno Thomas. Two minutes later, referee Mc Phie was at the centre of controversial once more as he waived off another call for a penalty for Ma Pau when Ceasar was tripped over in the area by Joe Public defender, Jason “Froggy” Springer. At the other end of the field, Antigua and Barbudan striker, Gason Gregory also had a shout for a penalty turned down after a solo run. Joe Public goalkeeper, Marvin Phillip, by far the busier of the two ‘keepers on the night came to his team’s rescue 14 minutes from the end when he fisted overbar a right footed blast from Molino.
