T&T Red Force cricketers romped to their second win of the 2016 Nagico Super50 series at the Queen's Park Oval yesterday, crushing the Barbados Pride by nine wickets to go atop the standings in Group A.
A brilliant bowling display backed up by solid batsmanship were the order of the day for the locals, as they completely outplayed a Barbados outfit that was just not up for the fight. The emphatic nine-wicket win gives them two victories in two matches and they now face the ICC Americas in their third clash at Shaw Park in Tobago tomorrow.
Off-spinner Jon Russ Jaggessar was again on the ball yesterday and claimed 3/24 to hustle out the Barbadian Pride for 161, three balls short of their 50-over allotment.
Set the relatively simple task of getting 162 runs for victory at 3.24 runs per over the Red Force lost opener Evin Lewis for a 'duck' but the dependable Kyle Hope (70 not out) and Kjorn Ottley (80 not out), playing his first game of the tournament batted beautifully together to bring home the win.
One punch off the back foot from Hope for four, signalled the extent of his form and Ottley followed suit from the other end. The left handed First Citizens Clarke Road player struck a number of eye-catching cover drives that were lapped up by the small crowd on hand. He was first to his half century and was quickly followed by Hope. Ottley's milestone came off 76 balls with seven fours, while Hope got his first List A half century off 68 balls with five fours and one six.
When the victory was formalised Ottley had 80 not out off 112 balls with 11 fours, while Hope was 70 not out off 100 balls with six fours and a six. They added an unbroken 162 runs for the second wicket, off 212 balls.
Earlier, Barbados won the toss and decided to take first strike with the hope of enjoying the better period to bat on the Oval pitch. They met a determined Red Force outfit, who continued the disciplined work they started against the Jamaican Scorpions in their opening win.
The Barbadians were under pressure right from the start and Red Force took charge by getting the early wickets of Dwayne Smith (4) and Kevin Stoute (4). Smith had his stumps disturbed by Rayad Emrit and Marlon Richards getting the ball to shape away nicely, saw Stoute touch one to keeper Steven Katwaroo.
At 14/2 the home team did not let up and off-spinner Jon Russ Jaggessar enjoying his introduction to regional cricket got rid of West Indies batsman Jonathan Carter, as Barbados slipped further to 35/3.Soon it would become 66/6 and the visitors were in danger of not making triple figures.
Roston Chase decided to grit it out and played a patient game in an effort to get the innings back on track. He found an able ally in Justin Greaves and they added 60 runs for the seventh wicket.
However, on reaching his half century Chase gave it away and from there the innings went downhill again. The right hander faced 87 balls and struck three fours. Greaves was the last man out for 31 off 65 balls and Ashley Nurse scored a brisk 21 off 20 balls with one six and one four.
