We are no strain on national budget says Queen’s Park
Queen’s Park Cricket Club has responded to claims made that the T&T Cricket Board (T&TCB) failed in it’s bid to land the regional T20 series because of the club’s ‘exorbitant’ rental fee. In a release yesterday, the club said it was important to note that they are the only privately-owned venue for international cricket within the region. It is a non-profit organisation and revenues from the ground rentals are reinvested in ground maintenance and improvements. In other territories governments subsidise the maintenance and improvements. “The cost of developing and maintaining the Oval as a world class international cricket venue has been achieved at little or no cost to the T&T Government and represents no ongoing burden on the national budget.”
The club further stated that it will continue to work closely with the T&TCB in ensuring that the Oval is host to a reasonable share of international and regional cricket for the benefit of the T&T public. “The Club in the furtherance of this goal has adopted a deliberate strategy of making the facility available for hosting such events at minimal cost (if any) with the provision that all costs necessarily incurred in staging the event are to be borne by the T&TCB/WICB such that no cost accrues to the membership of the Club.
“In the specific case of the 2011 Caribbean Twenty/20 Tournament the Club stood to lose significant revenue directly as a result of having to give the WICB ‘unrestricted control of the venue for a 25 day period’. In the circumstances it was compelled to include a ‘ground rental’ fee in its submission to the T&TCB. “The purported ‘exorbitant rent’ quoted of $2.9m is, however, misleading given that, of that sum, approximately $1.2m represented direct costs of staging the tournament which costs would in any event be for the account of the WICB. It is therefore incorrect to consider this sum to be a ground-rental fee charged by QPCC.”
