Cane Farm cricket club from Arouca had mixed fortunes on the opening day of the 2017 UWI T20 tournament, as they defeated Central Sports in their first match and then fell via a bowl-off to Queen's Park in the second rain-interrupted game.
In the first match a star studded Cane Farm outfit made 191/5 batting first against Central Sports. Leading the way was Imran Khan who slapped 53 of 47 balls. He was ably assisted by Lendl Simmons with 41 of 32 balls and Anthony Simmons with 47 of 33 deliveries.
Central Sports in reply were restricted to 179/7 - losing by just 12 runs. Jahron Alfred brought them close with a quickfire 63 of 34 balls that included five sixes and four fours. Kjorn Ottley was also good at the top with 54 of 47 balls, including five fours and two sixes.
Pacers Ravi Rampaul with 2/15 and Rayad Emrit 3/36 were the major wicket takers.
In the second game, Cane Farm came up against Queen's Park Cricket Club and the game was badly affected by rain. Queen's Park was 172/3 in 19.2 overs when the heavens opened and cut off too much time for a Cane Farm reply. Batting for Queen's Park, Tion Webster made 58 of 72 balls, Darron Cruickshank 57 not out of 39 balls and Nicholas Pooran 23 not out off 11 balls.
The match was then decided on a bowl off with five bowlers allowed to bowl to the stumps with no batsman defending it. Queen's Park struck the stumps twice in the form of Akeal Hosein and Darren Bravo, while Cane Farm hit just once thanks to Jon Russ Jaggessar. Queen's Park took the bowl off 2-1 and collected the two points for the win.
Last night they were battling Central Sports in match three.
