Star-studded Cane Farm Cricket Club walked away with the 2017 UWI T20 title after a crushing 67-run win over Demerara of Guyana on the final, Sunday night at the Sir Frank Worrell grounds in St Augustine.
A brilliant 90 from West Indies player Evin Lewis upstaged a fifth consecutive half century from Gajanand Singh, as the men from Arouca celebrated late into the night winning their first ever UWI T20 title.
They now join Esmeralda, Merryboys and Club Crusoe as title winners of the popular pre-season event cklosed of another successful edition.
Lewis hammered 10 sixes and six fours and needed only 35 balls to take his team to a huge 217 for seven in their allotted 20 overs. T&T Red Force all rounder Roshon Primus chipped in with 43 of 18 balls, which included three sixes and four fours, while Lendl Simmons at the top of the order made 26 of 27 balls. Sherfane Rutherford was the best of the Guyanese bowlers with 3/32.
DCC in reply were depending heavily on Singh and he did not disappoint for the fifth success time in the tournament. Going into the finals, he had scored four unbeaten half centuries and whilst, he was at the crease DCC looked like chasing down the title.
However when he finally felt what it was like being dismissed in Trinidad, his side folded for 150 of 17.1 overs. The left hander faced 39 balls in his aggressive contribution and finished the series with 327 runs with five half centuries and an average of 327.00. This was enough to give him the player of the series. Apart from him only Kellon Carmichael with 34 of 21 balls and West Indies youth player Kemo Paul 25 of 11 balls showed fight.
The Barbadian Primus who would go on to win the man of the match award grabbed four wickets for 39 runs, while Ravi Rampaul took 2/19. Pacer Rampaul finished the series as the leading wicket taker with 11 scalps.
