Merryboys Sports Club defeated PowerGen Sports by 10 wickets on day two of their opening match of the 2017 TTCB Premiership cricket series at the Brian Lara ground in Santa Cruz yesterday.
Merryboys resuming the day on 135/3 in pursuit of PowerGen's first innings score of 208, made 286 with all rounder Marlon Richards hitting a whirlwind 68.
Guyanese Ranga Latchana who started the day on 24 not out, pushed on to 53. PowerGen then batted poorly in their second innings reaching just 125 all out, with Cephas Cooper the only player fighting it out with a gritty 39.
Merryboys then rushed to 49 without loss to claim the 10-wicket win and 25 points to start the season.
At Charlieville, Alescon Comets took first innings points over Tableland, thanks to a five-wicket haul from Bryan Charles.
Last weekend, Comets made 284 all out and Tableland batting yesterday responded with 226 all out.
Leading the way were Tariq Abdul 65 and Al Small 47.
Batting a second time Comets closed the day on 110/4 for an overall lead of 168 runs. Newly promoted Central Sports are in the drivers seat to force an outright victory over First Citizens Clarke Road at Wilson Road.
Richard Ramkissoon's men are 143 runs away from a victory with nine wickets standing. Yesterday, they bowled out Clarke Road for 208 in their second innings to set themselves 184 for victory.
At the close they reached 41/1 and would fancy their chances of going all the way then play resumes this morning. Terry Holness with 86 and Yannick Ottley 63, batted well for Clarke Road but they could not get support from the others to mount a big score.
Across at Barrackpore West Secondary, Queen's Park found some resistance from Windward Islands batsman Keddy Lesporis and this game seems headed for a draw. After finally declaring their first innings at 350/8 declared, the Parkites could not run through the Victoria batting and they closed on 189/4. Lesporis the right hander scored an attractive 93 and with support from former T&T player Sherwin Ganga 60 not out, the southern team gave a good showing against the defending champions.
Play resumes today at 10am.
