Husbands fire City Hall to PoS football title

Sunday, August 20, 2017
Members of the City Hall football team pose after winning the 2017 Port-of-Spain City Corporation Inter-Department Football League title over seven other departments.

Anthony Husbands scored a pair of goals as City Hall battled past Transport & Cleaning 3-2 to lift the 2017 Port-of-Spain Corporation Inter-Department Football Tournament League title at Nelson Mandela Park (Formerly King George V Park) on Wednesday night.

Going into the contest, Transport & Cleaning led the eight-team table with 16 points from six matches, two clear of previous joint-leader City Hall, and needed only a draw to be crowned champions.

However, it was not to be as Husbands’ double and one from N’Kosi Raphael cancelled out Nicholas Solomon and Andy Charles strikes for Transport & Cleaning.

With the win, City Hall ended with 17 points, one ahead of Transport & Cleaning and St James Division, the latter of which grabbed second spot on goal-difference after hammering Public Health 6-0 in the final league match on Thursday.

For St James Division, Marvin Harper, Michael Harris, Kalim Young, Keston Williams, Sekou Long-Kujufi and Aton Thomas were all on target in the one-sided contest.

In another match, Central Market blasted Central/Eastern 10-0, led by a hat-trick from Tikeste Jules and two from Akeem Young.

The quintet of Jabari Bruce, Dillon Murrel, Yevan Rajpaul, Ysama Young and Kibwe Patterson also netted. And in the other match played, St James Medical edged Western Division, 2–1, with Stephan Guun and Tevin Figaro scoring for the winners while Akinola Paul got the losers’ lone item.

Attention now switches to the knockout competition which will kick off on Monday, August 21 with the final set for September 2.
