Regional tennis centre gets ITF support
International Tennis Federation (ITF) Consultant Gustavo Granitto has given the spanking new National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua the thumbs-up to be the regional training centre for the ITF.
Granitto, who has been here on a one-week visit to officially inspect the facility and determine how the ITF and the Tennis Association of T&T can utilise it in the best way possible, said his first impression was that it was a world class facility that can be used for a wide range of things.
“Initially my impression was that it is a really world class facility but it will be a nice challenge to see how it can be utilised in the best way, not only for the local players but for the region,” Granitto said.
He added: “It depends on how the association can meet the needs locally, because you can run everything. The tennis facility offers many opportunities for people to come and play, it offers recreational opportunities and will establish a point where coaches will need to increase and improve coaching education all the time, so I think there is a great combination of a structure and a facility to develop world class players and an opportunity to be part of something that will be fantastic for all of T&T.”
Granitto’s comments come on the heels of a vision by Hayden Mitchell, president of the Tennis Association of T&T to make the facility the regional training centre for the ITF. The ITF consultant who is expected to deliver a report on the TT facility to ITF president David Haggerty upon leaving local shores, embraced the vision of Mitchell and his tennis association, saying it is consistent with the quality of the facility.
He urged the tennis association to go after their goals and have no limits on what they can do at the facility. Mitchell said Granitto’s visit came due to the support they received from the ITF president.
