Centuries by Tion Webster and Yannic Cariah brought T&T Red Force right back into their Digicel Professional Cricket League (PCL) second round contest against the Jamaica Scorpions at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy yesterday.

Chasing a mountainous 432, the locals began the day on 133 for 4 and declared at 379 for seven, after Webster’s wonderful 178 and Cariah’s workmanlike 127.

At the close of the third day, the Scorpions batting a second time reached 29 for 1, for an overall lead of 82 runs with nine wickets standing.

The day belonged to the Queen’s Park duo of Webster and Cariah as they batted well into the final session, after resuming as the overnight pair. Starting the day on 49, Webster struck the first ball he faced sweetly through covers for four, to reach his half century. He looked very sound in defence and was brilliant in attack.

The big hitting right-hander reached his century with a six over long on. It marked his second First Class hundred in just his fourth First Class match. He continued to bat well after reaching the milestone as the Jamaican bowling looked flat.

Cariah, who began the day on 53, was patient and played the anchor role for Webster, intent on playing safely, given the match situation.

He brought up his third First Class hundred in the afternoon, becoming the third batman in the match to reach triple figures.

Jamaica skipper Paul Palmer tried everything he could to get a breakthrough but it didn’t come until late in the final session, when Paul Harrison had Cariah caught by Durval Green for 127. He spent a total of 432 minutes at the crease in which time he faced 299 balls, striking 14 fours.

Webster fell later on for an attacking 178 made in 420 minutes batting off 322 balls. He banged 17 fours and five sixes much to the delight of the small crowd on hand at the venue.

When play resumes today, the visitors will be looking to get quick runs to give Red Force a target on the slow low pitch, while Red Force will be looking to get quick wickets to hopefully bowl out the Scorpions cheaply and give themselves a manageable target.

Play on the fourth and final day today begins at 10 am.
