Second Page worth scrutiny

Second Page to finally hit the headlines in an ‘aged’ Median Auction Stakes over eleven furlongs of Southwell fibresand today when the official 2017/18 all-weather season gets under way with a seven-race programme which presents opportunities.

None better than Richard Hannon- trained Second Page, a Harbour Watch colt which has ‘failed’ ten times but ticks enough boxes for a decent punt.

Experience is a major factor, Second Page has achieved several time-handicap marks good enough to beat nine rivals, namely a close fourth (beaten less than two lengths!) on Kempton polytrack in a thirteen runner handicap in June; form at the Kew venue often equates to the ‘deep stuff’ on the Nottinghamshire circuit.

On three occasions Second Page has run well under Rossa Ryan whose 7lbs apprentice claim, significantly, is being utilised on this occasion.

Form-wise Epitaph and Line Of Beauty must be ‘on the premises’ and it will be interesting to see if twice-raced Swiss Vinare stays extra distance under Nocola Currie, another excellent apprentice claiming full allowance, for now!

An intriguing opener with Second Page, blinkered for the first time, nominated as an each-way special which can be played into The Big Lad, mount of Nicola for her guv’nor, Richard Hughes, in an eight-runner Apprentice Classified Claiming Stakes over five furlongs; best and fairest sprint course on this planet!

Course and distance winner, The Big Lad, also has plenty going for him and our only concern, regarding three placings is whether all ‘decs’ run!

Following a torrid turf-flat season for most punters it’s onwards and upwards for this column; whatever you did, regrets are pointless!

Incidentally, for what it’s worth, Brian Hughes is the best NH jockey around, absolutely superb, confident and tactically aware; watch him!
