PowerGen—UWI T20 kings

Monday, January 22, 2018
PowerGen batsman Jerron Maniram is presented with the Man of the Match award by UWI’s Dr. Trevor Alleyne after his team’s crushing win over Munroe Road.

It was a case of David versus Goliath as PowerGen cricket club defeated a star-studded Cane Farm outfit to clinch the 2018 UNICOM UWI T20 crown at the UWI Spec ground, St. Augustine on Saturday night.

Before a good crowd Lendl Simmons was left to defend eight runs from the final over for his team Cane Farm to take the crown.

He bowled well and took it down to two runs needed off the final ball. PowerGen skipper Ancil Bhaggan better known for his bowling clipped him to deep square leg and ran gleefully ran two, which sparked massive celebrations among the southern fans as they jumped and celebrate as the 2018 champions.

Simmons had earlier top scored for Cane Farm in a total of 127/7 off 20 overs. The Cane Farm found the going tough against disciplined bowling from the PowerGen bowlers and slipped to 60 for six at one stage. Simmons scored 34 off 25 balls at the top and it took a quick unbeaten 24 off 17 balls from all rounder Rayad Emrit, to see them to an eventual 127/7.

Daron Cruickshank, a guest player on the PowerGen roster for this tournament took 2 /20, while Mark Deyal who has been consistent with the ball in this tournament grabbed 2/23.

PowerGen was expected to get to the winning total without fuss, but the defending champions Cane Farm was not going to give up its crown without a fight. Roshan Primus prized out two scalps and Sunil Narine was brilliant in conceding just nine runs from his four overs and taking a wicket, to put PowerGen under pressure, forceing them to amend the winning strategy.

Lewis was brutal at the get go, hitting 39 of 24 balls, while Jerron Maniram who was adhudged 'Man of the Match' award scored a rapid 23. Ewart Nicholson the T&T Red Force player scored a controlled 39 off 37 balls.

However, in the end it was PowerGen's night as the team secured the crown. Cruickshank was named 'Player of the Series', while Roshon Primus collected the award for most runs and Deyal for the most wickets.
