Central FC advances to CFU semifinal
Central FC advanced to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Caribbean Club Championship on Sunday night after a 1-0 victory over hometeam Atlantico at the Estadio Cibao, Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic.
The lone item came off the leg of defender Yoan Melo in the 60th minute when midfielder Densill Theobald picked out captain Carlyle Mitchell inside the area from a right-side cross, but Mitchell's misdirected header fell nicely for his name-sake Darren Mitchell to fire his attempt against the legs of Melo to bundle in before his goalkeeper Cristian Blanco could get his hands to it.
However, the hometeam may feel unlucky not to have scored in the earlier moments as it was denied only by the acrobatics of Central custodian Montel Joseph.
In the 39th minute Jarol Herrera found himself at the end of a long free-kick inside the Central area, but his headed pass to the unmarked Joel Perucci was put over the bar with the latter having the goal at his mercy. And a minute before the half-time interval midfielder Cristofer Reynoso found himself all alone on top the box from a rightside centre by Herrera, but his stinging left footed drive was fisted out by Joseph in the Central goal.
With the win the Central men topped Group B with six points, storming back from their opening game defeat to Jamaica's Portmore United last week to win their two other matches. The Jamaicans finished second in the group on four points and will join the Central 'Sharks' in the semi-final where they will meet the first and second place teams of Group A- Atletico Pantoja of the Dominican Republic and Arnett Gardens of Jamaica.
The winner of the semi-final play-off will earn automatic qualification to the CONCACAF Club Championship, while the second and third place teams will advance to the CONCACAF League.
