Change or be changed that's the reality facing many sporting organisations locally and globally. Anyone paying close attention will acknowledge that the tolerance and acceptance of poor governance are reaching the tipping point.
Yesterday morning in a conversation about the price of the daily newspapers someone made the comment " the days of penny hops bread is over." The point being made was that the price of the daily newspapers will only keep getting higher.
The phrase, "The days of a penny for hops are over" can also be used in reference to the old way of administrating sport. As 2018 comes to a close it's clear that 2019 will prove much challenging for sports administrators who are resisting change. Change or be changed. Improving sports governance is an urgent priority in 2019 for all of us who wants to see better accountability from our administrators as they put our athletes first in every aspect of their governance. Some may well say it should be the only priority because if the epidemic of poor governance isn't addressed sport's potential to inspire youth and young people to express their best self will remain unfulfilled.
Today as the joy and spirit of Christmas is celebrated across the twin Island Republic and all over the world, there are many who for many different reasons will not be able to feel that Christmas joy as you and I. On Sunday Christopher Seon passed away. Well known as " DJ Chris" Seon was an avid sports fan and Team TTO supporter. He always had encouraging words and expressions for Team TTO athletes and we could have always counted on his support with any effort be it fundraising or otherwise. His untimely passing during the height of the Christmas season has left all of those people who knew him at a loss for words. I take this opportunity to extend condolences to his family, friends and colleagues and to his partner Seigonie Mohammed.
Chris and I crossed paths more often than not on a daily basis while getting lunch at the popular " Manos" on Park Street, Port-of-Spain. Before heading back to the studio he always made time for a quick chat about sports, music, Trini culture, Trinidad and Tobago and the issues of the day. Always positive and optimistic regardless of the difficulties that he faced on his daily journey. Rest in Peace Christopher.
The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee 24th Annual Awards ceremony will be held on its customary date of 29th December. There is the usual eager anticipation for the announcements of the various awardees. It has been a year of highs and lows. On the 29th we celebrate the highs.
