Many children in Diego Martin Central constituency had their dreams came through when their Member of Parliament Darryl Smith hosted his Fourth Annual Vacation Camp at his Orchid Drive, Petit Valley office from August 6-10. The camp which attracted 40 participants during the one week programme.
The campers were exposed to a number of different fun-filled activities such as art and craft, baking, music, basketball and they even learned how to make scented candles. They were also taken on a, know your country tour to the Pitch Lake where they experienced the warm waters of the Pitch Kake’s ponds.
Smith, the former Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs also used the occasion to distribute book supplies to all the campers. One camper said, “I’m happy but sad, it’s only one week we get to spend at this camp and every day we do something different. This camp is better than all the other camps I’ve been to and once my parents allow me to come back next year I will be right here in Uncle Darryl camp. That’s why I’m said, I have to wait another whole year for this camp.”
Smith said, “It continues to warm my heart seeing the smiles on the kid's faces every time we host camps such as these. If we can make a difference in the lives of these kids, that’s what is important for me. If they take away something that they can use from the camp, that's what is important to me. If they pick up a sport or activity that keeps them in safe hands, that's what is important to me. I’m just happy I’m in a position to give back to my community.”
