It was described as tyranny, dictatorship, chaos, untidy, ugly, a melee, a shouting match; this was not the movie Black Panther which many of you have seen, and it certainly was not an episode of Ripley's Believe It or Not! But rather, it was supposed to be a simple reconvening of the TTFA's Annual General Meeting (AGM) but it never got underway.
Unbelievably, this was the TTFA's fourth successive attempt to hold its 2017 AGM. From all my sources, it was a complete farce which started and ended in a shouting match between certain members who are not “supporters” of the President and they decided that enough was enough and came prepared to discuss the items on the agenda. It appears that the TTFA's President was equally prepared and it would seem that he does not back down from a good fight, and as one member described it to me, “we were in the absolute ravine”.
What an utter embarrassment for the sport of football in this country. These are the same administrators that are going to be knocking on sponsors' doors pleading and begging like Little Bo-Peep asking for assistance for the various national teams when we start our national programmes and competitions. Then when sponsors do not come on board they get upset and spew out garbage about corporate T&T not supporting the sport. Why in Heaven's name would a sponsor support chaos, 'ravine behaviour' and ugly scenes from an association's AGM?
Apparently the first annual financial statement was to be presented by the President of the TTFA and the finances regarding the construction at the TTFA's new “home of football”, something I myself have been trying to find out for weeks (it seems like years), was to be enquired about. Not even the Minister of Sport or the Chairman of SPORTT can help with some kind of clarification but they were busy posing for photos with some sort of tool in hand.
When I look at the sequence of events as to the reasons why the AGM has been postponed on the 3 previous occasions, it is nothing short of farcical. On one occasion the TTFA chose 8am on the 23rd December perhaps hoping that 'opposition' members would not turn up 2 days before Christmas but unfortunately for the TTFA, the members showed up and those present at the meeting were told that the TTFA President was unwell. The Vice-President tried to chair the meeting and quite rightly the membership refused as there were burning questions that the President himself had to answer. I sincerely hope he got better in time for the Christmas festivities.
The reconvened meeting was set for February 20th 2018 - a date hand-picked by the TTFA President. Again there was a no show; more disrespect for the membership so the inevitable outcome was another postponement of the AGM. The next reconvened (I am getting tired of that word) meeting is to be held in 14 days which puts it right in the midst of Easter. Maybe the TTFA is hoping that Glorious Saturday would be glorious for them and as one member told me, “they are hoping that the 'opposition' do not turn up so they can have a peaceful meeting and get things passed without any questions being asked”. Another important piece of information coming from members is the Chief Accounting Officer has resigned and the board of the TTFA has not informed members. Hang on a minute - this is a financial position of utmost importance and the board of the TTFA does not see the value of informing the membership. Unbelievable!
I am hopeful that members do not get frustrated and throw in the towel as it appears this could be playing into certain people's hands. It is ironic that what is taking place is actually interesting for football in this country. Until the board of the TTFA has an all-inclusive approach, there will never be harmony in football. There are certain people who believe they can run football as their domain, their little puppy dog - who to sack, who to hire, who to take charge of certain things etc...
To the members of the football fraternity, I say do not give up. Football belongs to the people of T&T and no one individual should hold the sport to ransom. We MUST demand answers, that is our right enshrined in the nation's constitution and we must get results. If it is not forthcoming and the ship is going off course, then it is up to the crew to undertake a repositioning.
