Michelle-Lee Ahye, Reyare Thomas, Khalifa St Fort and Deon Lendore were among a number of T&T athletes that were successful on Saturday at various meets in the USA and in the Caribbean.
Ahye ran a season's best to open her outdoor season with a win in the women's 200 metres at the Incarnate Word Invitational, San Antonio in the United States on Saturday.
The Adidas sprinter clocked 23.61 seconds to cross first in the half-lap event which also saw Thomas placed third in 23.97 Thomas though, did get success in the women's 100m, winning with an 11.74-clocking.
St Fort was another gold medallist on the weekend, sprinting to victory in the women's 200m at the Rafer Johnson & Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational in Los Angeles, California on the same day.
St Fort, in her first outing of the season, won section one of the timed finals in the fastest overall time of 23.52.
At the Grenada Invitational which unfolded at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St George’s, Lendore placed first in the men’s 400m "B" race in 46.05, finishing ahead of American Michael Berry in 46.38 and another T&T quartermiler, Renny Quow, who was third in 46.93. In the "A" race, which was won by Grenada's Bralon Taplin (44.92), T&T’s Asa Guevara was fifth in 46.92.
In the men’s 200m, Kyle Greaux was third in 20.51 while in the men’s 200m "B" race, T&T had three athletes compete. Twin brothers Jonathan and Nathan Farinha and former national sprint champion Emmanuel Callender. Jonathon was the lone sprinter of the trio reaching the podium, bagging bronze in 20.73 while Nathan's time of 21.39 saw him take fifth place and Callender trailed in sixth spot with21.67. Callender also competed in the men's 100m “B” race and placed fifth in 10.74.
In the women's version of the dash, Semoy Hackett missed out on a medal after placing fifth in 11.60 with two-time Olympic sprint champion Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce winning in a new meet record of 11.20.
Hackett and another local printer Kai Selvon faced the starter in the women's 200m. The latter crossed sixth in 23.88 while Hackett did not finish the race.
Among the local hurdlers in action in the annual meet were Sparkle McKnight and Jameel Joseph.
McKnight was a bronze medallist in the women’s 400m hurdles with a 56.07-clocking while in the men's race, Joseph placed seventh in 59.81.
Also on the track, Alena Brooks just missed out on a medal after placing fourth in the women’s 800m in 2:04.86.
Over on the field, T&T’s Andwuelle Wright was a bronze medallist as well in the men’s long jump with his best leap measuring 8.00m.
On Friday night at the Tennessee Relays, Knoxville, Rondel Sorillo, running unattached, won the men's 100m and was second in the men's 200m. In the dash, he nabbed gold in 10.17 and then copped silver in the half-lap event in 20.70.
Also that night, Marcus Duncan of Jet LLC placed third in heat three of the men's 100m with 10.82 to be 19th overall at the Aggie Invitational in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA.
