Akeem Stewart clinched the gold medal to repeat as champion in the men's F64 discus event, breaking his World record in the process on Tuesday at the Parapan American Games in Peru.
In another exciting evening for T&T at the Athletics Stadium in the National Sporting Village in Lima, the field specialist picked up this country's second medal and first gold. On Sunday, Nyoshia Cain-Claxton copped bronze in the women's 200 metres.
Stewart, who competes in the F43 class, assured his victory in the fourth round of the discus, reaching a distance of 63.70m, to beat the World and Pan American F43 record of 63.03, he set at the Parapan Games in Toronto, Canada back in 2015.
The gold medallist got to the winning mark on his fourth throw after opening with a 60.05-throw. He fouled on his second and fifth attempts but had marks of 61.98m and 60.27 in his third and sixth throws.
Stewart's closest challenger was American Jeremy Campbell (F64), who had a huge second throw of 62.92m, a personal record, good enough for the silver medal. Bagging bronze was Cuban Gerdan Fonseca Bernal (F64) with a season's best 44.34m.
Today the Tobago-born athlete will be aiming to duplicate his performance in Toronto where he also set what was then a new world record in the javelin F43 with 53.36m.
He returns to the field, hoping to defend his title in the men's F64 javelin as he looks to finish top of the podium for the second time at the Games.
Also back in action, this evening will be Cain-Claxton going after her second medal of the Games as well in the women's T64 200m and Carlos Greene, who will compete in the men's F11 shot put.
Greene was a fifth-place finisher in the men's F11 discus on Sunday with 27.76m.
