Shaniqua Bascombe of Cougars athletics club did not disappoint on her return to the track comfortably winning the Girls Under-20 100 metres at the National Association of Athletics Administration of T&T (NAAATT) National Gas Company Track and Field Series Five at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain on Sunday.
The Junior Sportswoman of the Year of 2018 and 2019 and the Carifta 200m U-17 champion, who returned from injury including a broken left hand, crossed first in a time of 12.22 seconds but did not go under the proposed qualifying standard of 11.97 for the upcoming Carifta Games in Bermuda in August.
Following her to the line in the faster of the two sections in the timed finals were, respectively, Kyah La Fortune of Simplex with 12.64 and Cougars teammate Reneisha Andrews with 12.67.
In the boys' version of the race (standard 10.74), Devin Augustine of Point Fortin New Jets (PFNJ) was first overall winning section four with 11.06. The Carifta sprint gold medallist finished ahead of the winner of section two, Revell Webster (Concorde) with 11.10 and in third place was section four runner-up Kengel Christopher (UTT Fast Track) with 11.24.
In the men's sprint event, Olympian Rondell Sorrillo's time of 10.93 placed him fifth overall after crossing second in section three. The La Brea Athletics sprinter as expected was pressed by Abilene Wilcats' Nathan Farinha (10.96) but neither could overcome the winner of the section, Concorde's Shakeel John (10.90).
Farinha placed sixth overall while John tied for third place with Simplex's Khaliyq Abdullah (10.90) in the dash which was won by Concorde's Omari Lewis (10.72) with Stallion's Xaverri Williams (10.85) in second spot.
Janae De Gannes excelled on both the track and field for Concorde, winning the Girls U-17 100m with a 12.13-clocking, matching the qualifying standard of 12.13, to coolly beat out second-place Symphony Patrick (Concorde) with 12.55 and third-place Kaziah Peters (Simplex) with 12.64.
Over on the field, De Gannes leaped 6.06m to take the top spot in the long jump, ahead of Concorde clubmate Gianna Paul (5.54m). Both athletes surpassed the standard of 5.34m.
Paul did, however, get success in the high jump winning with a 1.63m-leap, again going past the 1.55m-standard, ahead of Kernesha Shelbourne (Oasics) with 1.50m
Also meeting the proposed standards were Dorian Charles (PFNJ) with 50.77m in the U-17 javelin (44.85), Savion Joseph (UTT Fast Track) 7.05m in the U-20 long jump (7.04) and Nathaniel Mathura (El Do East Sec) 59.49m in the U-20 javelin (58.50), among the boys.
And also for the girls, Kayleigh Forde of Cougars with 5:10.24 in the Girls 1,500m, going under the 5:16.40-standard.
