T&T’s beach volleyball pair of Fabian Whitfield and Daneil Williams had to settle for the sixth position overall on the third leg of the North Central American and Caribbean (NORCECA) Beach Volleyball Tour in the Cayman Islands, on Sunday.
Playing at the Seven Miles Beach in a loser semifinal, the T&T pair defeated El Salvador duo Franklin Flores and Amando Guatemala in straight sets 2-0 (21-17, 21-17) in their first match of the day for the right to square off with the Americans who defeated them in the group phase early on Saturday, for the fifth and sixth position.
Seeking to avenge that match, however, the T&T men battled in the first set before they eventually surrendered 21-11 against the powerful pair of William Kolinske and Hagan Smith.
Thereafter, the Americans appeared to have gotten the measure of their counterparts and cruised to the win in the second set 21-10 for the fifth-place finish overall.
However, the T&T men will be satisfied with their finish as they have shown steady progress with every tour. In the first tour, they finished in 13th position and in the second leg they were seventh. Now at the sixth position, they appear to be making the strides they were hoping for.
On Saturday in Pool B, the T&T men defeated Anguilla’s twosome of Aiden Hazzard and Da’Qwan Fredericks 2-0 (21-8, 21-5). It ensured they progressed out of the group as the second-place team, following their loss to USA.
