Trinidad and Tobago's sprint cyclists tasted gold for the second time in just over a month, this time blowing away the opposition in the men's team sprint event at the 2019 Elite Pan American Track Cycling Championships in Cochabamba, Bolivia on Wednesday night.
In the process, the trio of Keron Bramble, Njisane Phillip and Nicholas Paul set a new Pan American record and a new national record of 41.938 seconds riding in the Elite Pan American final against Argentina's Farid Suarez, Juan Serrano and Lucas Vilar who clocked 44.474 seconds. In the bronze medal ride, Ecuador clocked 45.260 seconds to beat Chile which came home in 46.062 seconds.
Only on August 1 at the Pan American multi-sport Games in Lima, Peru, the same combination of Bramble, Phillip and Paul sped to team sprint gold in 43.792 to win this country's first-ever Gold medal at the Pan American Games. Last night they teamed up again in another historic ride, this time dipping to within 0.067 seconds of the world record, which stands at 41.871 and is held by Germany.
Earlier on Wednesday during qualifying, Bramble, Phillip and Kwesi Browne indicated that they were in blistering form with 42.395 seconds clocking. It was the fastest time ever recorded by any team from the Pan American region and among the five fastest times in the men's team sprint ahead of a strong field that included opponents (Argentina), Ecuador, Chile and the host Bolivia. Colombia, another cycling giants worldwide, failed to be among the top four as they were disqualified.
