T&T's Jameela Mc Carthy has signed with the Sara­cens Mav­er­icks to com­pete in the up­com­ing Vi­tal­i­ty Su­per Net­ball League (VSNL) in Eng­land.

The six-foot­er was among five de­fend­ers named by the Hert­ford­shire-based team on Tues­day via its so­cial me­dia plat­forms when they an­nounced the squad for the 2022 VSNL sea­son.

"To­day is a great day for net­ball in T&T. A great day for me," said an ex­cit­ed Mc­Carthy, yes­ter­day.

"I am so thank­ful for the op­por­tu­ni­ty to be signed by the Sara­cens Mav­er­icks for the up­com­ing 2022 Vi­tal­i­ty Su­per League. This would not on­ly ben­e­fit me but it would ben­e­fit my coun­try. I am ex­cit­ed and ready for pre-sea­son.

"I am ready for my game to de­vel­op and to take my net­ball ca­reer to the next lev­el."

Mc­Carthy was part of the na­tion­al se­nior team at the 2019 Net­ball World Cup in Eng­land when the "Ca­lyp­so Girls" last com­pet­ed be­fore the coro­n­avirus (COVID-19) pan­dem­ic halt­ed all com­pe­ti­tions.

How­ev­er, the T&T team will get their first taste of in­ter­na­tion­al com­pe­ti­tion in its tour of Ja­maica, from next Wednes­day and Mc­Carthy will be part of the team be­fore jet­ting off to Eng­land.

"I leave with the na­tion­al net­ball team to take part in the Ja­maica Se­ries from Oc­to­ber 13-21, 2021. I then leave from Ja­maica straight to Eng­land on Oc­to­ber 22, to start my pre-sea­son train­ing," said a thrilled Mc­Carthy.

Mc­Carthy will be the third lo­cal net­baller in re­cent times and fourth over­all to ply her trade in Eng­land. She will suit up for the same team which re­cruit­ed both na­tion­al shoot­ers and cur­rent co-cap­tains, Saman­tha Wal­lace, back in 2016 and Kali­fa Mc­Collin in 2018 but un­der dif­fer­ent spon­sors.

Wal­lace, who is present­ly based in Aus­tralia, joined the pro­fes­sion­al ranks in Eng­land when she was snapped up by the then Hert­ford­shire Mav­er­icks where she com­pet­ed for one sea­son be­fore go­ing 'Down Un­der' to com­pete with the New South Wales Swifts (2017-present) in the Sun­corp Su­per Net­ball League.

Mc­Collin, who last sea­son com­pet­ed with the Colling­wood Mag­pies be­fore part­ing ways, played three sea­sons in the Eng­lish league with the Celtic Drag­ons (2016-17, 2019) and the then benecos Mav­er­icks (2018). Mc­Collin al­so had a stint in New Zealand with the South­ern Steel in the ANZ Pre­mier­ship.

The oth­er net­baller was Anas­tas­cia Wil­son, who com­pet­ed with the Man­ches­ter-based North­ern Thun­der, back in 2010.

The trio of Mc­Carthy, Wal­lace and Mc­Collin will team up against the Ja­maican "Sun­shine Girls" in three match­es are sched­uled for Oc­to­ber 16, 18 and 20.
