T&T's Jameela Mc Carthy has signed with the Saracens Mavericks to compete in the upcoming Vitality Super Netball League (VSNL) in England.
The six-footer was among five defenders named by the Hertfordshire-based team on Tuesday via its social media platforms when they announced the squad for the 2022 VSNL season.
"Today is a great day for netball in T&T. A great day for me," said an excited McCarthy, yesterday.
"I am so thankful for the opportunity to be signed by the Saracens Mavericks for the upcoming 2022 Vitality Super League. This would not only benefit me but it would benefit my country. I am excited and ready for pre-season.
"I am ready for my game to develop and to take my netball career to the next level."
McCarthy was part of the national senior team at the 2019 Netball World Cup in England when the "Calypso Girls" last competed before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic halted all competitions.
However, the T&T team will get their first taste of international competition in its tour of Jamaica, from next Wednesday and McCarthy will be part of the team before jetting off to England.
"I leave with the national netball team to take part in the Jamaica Series from October 13-21, 2021. I then leave from Jamaica straight to England on October 22, to start my pre-season training," said a thrilled McCarthy.
McCarthy will be the third local netballer in recent times and fourth overall to ply her trade in England. She will suit up for the same team which recruited both national shooters and current co-captains, Samantha Wallace, back in 2016 and Kalifa McCollin in 2018 but under different sponsors.
Wallace, who is presently based in Australia, joined the professional ranks in England when she was snapped up by the then Hertfordshire Mavericks where she competed for one season before going 'Down Under' to compete with the New South Wales Swifts (2017-present) in the Suncorp Super Netball League.
McCollin, who last season competed with the Collingwood Magpies before parting ways, played three seasons in the English league with the Celtic Dragons (2016-17, 2019) and the then benecos Mavericks (2018). McCollin also had a stint in New Zealand with the Southern Steel in the ANZ Premiership.
The other netballer was Anastascia Wilson, who competed with the Manchester-based Northern Thunder, back in 2010.
The trio of McCarthy, Wallace and McCollin will team up against the Jamaican "Sunshine Girls" in three matches are scheduled for October 16, 18 and 20.
