T&T’s Akil Campbell won three of the four men’s Omnium events and placed third in the other, to be crowned the overall winner of the Omnium when the Team Drive Phase Sports (Team DPS) Carnival of Speed sanctioned by the T&T Cycling Federation pedalled off at the National Cycling Centre in Balmain, Couva on Saturday.
The winner of the same event when Team DPS staged the two-day “Speed Paradise” at the same venue, Campbell, who recently competed at the UCI Nations Cup in Milton, Canada but failed to medal, picked up where he left off on local soil with victory in the Carnival of Speed Men’s Elite Tempo Race, Elimination Race, and Points Race while he had to settle for the third spot in the Scratch Race behind USA’s Daniel Breuer, and Barbadian Jamol Eastmond.
The 27-year-old San Fernando-born Campbell won the Carnival of Speed Men’s Elite Omnium Tempo Race (10k) with a tally of 40 points to beat Breuer (38) and Barbadian Edwin Sutherland (36) into second and third, respectively, while Stuart Gardner of Great Britain was fourth with 34, and Eastmond, two points back in the fifth spot.
Campbell also narrowly won the Elimination Race with 40 points, just ahead of Eastmond (38) and Breuer (36) while T&T’s Liam Trepte was a creditable fourth with 34, closely followed by Sutherland, two points back.
However, in the 25k Men’s Elite Omnium Points Race, Campbell saved his best performance for last on the night as he rode away with first place with 176 points, well ahead of Eastmond (160) and Breuer (149) with Sutherland (138) and Gardner (93), a distant fourth and fifth-placed, respectively.
Earlier on the night in the Scratch Race (10k), Breuer won gold with 40 points followed by Eastmond (38), and Campbell, with 36. The second and final day of the event took place on Sunday.
