T&T’s Dylan Carter picked up his second bronze medal in the men’s 4x100 medley relay when Group B of the inaugural International Swimming League (ISL) continued at the Duna Arena in Budapest, Hungary, on the weekend.
On Saturday, the 23-year-old Carter (50.14) swam the third leg of the LA Current II quartet, which also included Ryan Murphy, Josh Prenot and Jack Conger, for a time of three minutes, 25.47 seconds to trail the London Roar, who won in 3:21.64 and LA Current I (3:22.46).
The previous week at the Westside Aquatic Centre in Texas, USA, Carter (46.95 seconds) swam the final leg of the LA Current II men’s 4x100 quartet, which clocked 3:25.69 seconds to also secure third spot.
Also on Saturday in Hungary, Carter swam the third leg as part of the LA Current II’s quartet of Michael Chadwick, Conger and Murphy for a combined time of three minutes, 09.25 seconds for fifth spot in the 4x100 metres freestyle relay.
On Sunday in Budapest, Carter just missed a top-three finish when he ended fourth in the men’s 50m butterfly in 22.84 seconds, the same as Iron’s Kristof Milak, to split the points due to a tie Crowd favourite Sebastian Szabo took the win over Tom Shields and beat out USA’s Caleb Dressel’s world-leading time, going 22.20. Shields was 22.48 for the LA Current, with the New York Breakers’ Michael Andrew nabbing his first top-three finish of the weekend in 22.73.
It was a similar finish for Carter when they began competition as he clocked 23.04 seconds in the men’s 50m butterfly with Szabo (22.47), Shields (22.51) and Michael (22.70) again the top three finishers.
And in the Mixed 4x100m freestyle relay, Carter, Pieroni, Anastasia Gorbenko and Farida Osman of LA Current II combined for the sixth spot in 3:21.66, well adrift of winners London Roar (3:17.05), LA Current I (3:18.97) and New York Breakers (3:20.13).
At the end of day-two and some 37 events, London Roar topped the table with 505.5 points, just as they did in Texas, while Iron (425) moved ahead of LA Current (408) with NY Breakers fourth with 292.5. Team Iron’s Katinka Hosszu (47) won the MVP race ahead of Kyle Chambers while Carter was 58th with 11 points.
Next up for Carter and LA Current will be the Derbies at College Park, Maryland, USA, from November 16-17.
