Swimmer Dylan Carter produced the third-fastest time in the men’s 50-metre butterfly semifinals Saturday to secure a place in the final, which was scheduled for last night at the 2026 TYR Pro Swim Series in Sacramento, USA.
After failing to mount the podium at the meet up to date, the Trinidad and Tobago Olympian entered the preliminary round of his pet event, securing his place in the title swim with a third-place performance of 23.49 seconds. The race was won by Dutchman Sean Niewold, who splashed to the wall in a time of 22.94 seconds, with American Michael Andrew also booking his place in the final at 23.37 seconds. Santo Condorelli was fourth in 23.61 seconds.
Carter, the T&T record-holder in the long-course and short-course 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly, and 100m butterfly, appeared to be well-placed for a podium finish in his pet event.
Earlier in the meet, Carter had twice drew blanks in the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle events.
In the backstroke, he cruised into the medal race with a third-place result in 25.56 seconds behind eventual winner Ryan Murphy (25.36) and second-place Michael Andrew (25.53) in the preliminary rounds. However, disaster struck in the final, as Carter could only manage a fourth-place finish in 25.44.
For the second, Andrew claimed the gold medal with a time of 25.17, with Aiden Hayes (25.36) claiming the silver and Daniel Diehl taking the bronze (25.37).
Fortunes also failed to follow the lanky Trinibagonian in the 50-meter freestyle, where a disappointing seventh-place finish summed up his run in the event. Niewold, the confident Dutchman, sealed another gold medal when he splashed to a 21.92-second finish in the final, with the silver and bronze taken by Brendon Whitfield (21.99) and Lamar Taylor (22.10).
