Cumberbatch, Frederick and Waldron crowned with Carifta gold

Nathan Cum­ber­batch, Sanaa Fred­er­ick and Ta­fari Wal­dron won gold medals for T&T at the 50th Carif­ta Games in the Ba­hamas on Mon­day.

Cum­ber­batch reached the top of the podi­um in the boys' Un­der-20 800 me­tres, lead­ing for the en­tire race, to ease over the line in a time of one minute and 51.34 sec­onds at the Thomas A Robin­son Sta­di­um in Nas­sau.

T&T won two medals in the event as Ste­fan Came­jo made a late charge in the fi­nal me­tres of the race to go past Bermu­da's San­cho Smith to nab the bronze with a time of 1:52.92. Fa­vian Gol­lop of Bar­ba­dos was far-off sec­ond with 1:52.33.

Lat­er, Fred­er­ick, run­ning in lane four, had to keep fo­cused on her race strat­e­gy to win the girls' U-20 200m fi­nal. This af­ter two dis­qual­i­fi­ca­tions. First, Ja­maican Sab­ri­na Dock­ery, in lane three, was shown the red card for a false-start then La'nica Lock­er, in lane five, suf­fered the same fate when the race was restart­ed.

When the starter fi­nal­ly sent the re­main­ing six sprint­ers off, it was Fred­er­ick took the lead out of the blocks and led for the en­tire race to sprint to vic­to­ry in 23.60 ahead of British Vir­gin Is­lands' Keny­at­ta Grate (24.11) and Ba­hami­an Amari Pratt (24.17).

Wal­dron's suc­cess came next and he com­plete­ly dom­i­nat­ed the boys' U-20 5,000m fi­nal. He was a com­fort­able win­ner in 15:33.38 ahead of Bermu­dan duo Kahzi Sealey with 15:37.56 and Jake Bris­lane with 15:45.84. T&T's oth­er mid­dle-dis­tance run­ner Mark Dwari­ka missed out on a podi­um fin­ish, plac­ing with 16:15.65.

Ear­li­er, Bran­don Lea­cock al­so bagged a bronze medal for T&T in the boys' U-17 800m.

The 16-year-old clocked 1:58.17 to place third in the fi­nal which was won by Javon Roberts of Guyana with 1:56.64 and Ja­maican De­lano Todd placed sec­ond with 1:57.44.

T&T fin­ished with medals in three of the four 4x400m re­lay fi­nals. The girls' and boys' U-20 teams won sil­ver medals and the boys' U-17 quar­tet bagged bronze. The girls' U-17 unit placed fifth in its medal race.

In the morn­ing ses­sion at Carif­ta50, Janae De Gannes and Keneisha Shel­bourne picked up two more medals for T&T.

De Gannes copped sil­ver in the Girls Un­der-20 long jump event. The 17-year-old jumper placed sec­ond with an open­ing 5.93-me­tre leap. Her at­tempts in the fourth (5.82m), fifth (5.79m) and sixth (5.81) rounds would have won her the sil­ver.

Tak­ing gold was Ja­maica's Jade-Ann Dawkins nabbed gold with 6.14m, and Dei­janae Bruce, al­so of Ja­maica, bagged the bronze with 5.78m.

Shel­bourne's suc­cess at Carif­ta50 came in the girls' U-20 high jump. The 17-year-old placed third with a clear­ance of 1.75m, fin­ish­ing be­hind Ja­maican pair To­ri­an Cavien (1.181m) and Dei­janae Bruce (1.78m), re­spec­tive­ly.

On Sun­day, the T&T girls' U-17 4x100m re­lay team of Sym­pho­ny Patrick, Kaori Rob­ley, Kazi­ah Pe­ters and Alexxe Hen­ry was pro­mot­ed to the gold medal po­si­tion af­ter Ja­maica was dis­qual­i­fied for run­ning out of lane on the fi­nal han­dover. T&T clocked 46.18.

The boys U-17 4x100m team of Tre­vaughn Stew­art, Kadeem Chi­napoo, Im­mani Matthew and Jaden Clement earned a spot on the podi­um by tak­ing the bronze medal with 42.51 af­ter the Ja­maican team was dis­qual­i­fied for tak­ing the ba­ton "out of zone" on the sec­ond change-over.

Reneisha An­drews, Janae De Gannes, Sanaa Fred­er­ick and Sole Fred­er­ick, the girls' U-20 sprint quar­tet, earned sil­ver, with a 45.35-tim­ing and the boys' U-20 team of Keone John, Joshua Mas­call, Jor­dan Noel and Michael Jack end­ed the sprint re­lay se­ries by bag­ging bronze in a con­tro­ver­sial se­nior boys' race with 40.83.

Ear­li­er that evening, mul­ti-sports ath­lete Gi­an­na Paul copped sil­ver in the girls' open hep­tathlon. The 17-year-old, who won bronze in the event last edi­tion in Ja­maica, tal­lied 4,594 points in the sev­en-dis­ci­pline event to place sec­ond. T&T's Tenique Vin­cent placed sixth with 4,029.

In the boys' Oc­tathlon, T&T duo Je­re­mi Fran­cis was a sev­enth-place fin­ish­er with 4,654 points and Ki­mani Kent was eighth with 4,457 in the eight-dis­ci­pline sport.

Kaleb Camp­bell copped a sil­ver medal in the boys' U-17 high jump with a clear­ance of 1.95 me­tres.

On Sat­ur­day, T&T col­lect­ed one gold, two sil­ver and three bronze medals. Matthew picked up his first medal, gold in the boys' U-17 long jump, Do­ri­an Charles in the boys' U-20 javelin, and Pey­ton Win­ter in the girls' U-17 shot put, each copped sil­ver and the three bronze came from Sanaa Fred­er­ick in the girls U-20 100m, Jai­di James in the boys' U-20 high jump and Hen­ry in the girls' U-17 100m.

T&T claimed 22 medals over­all– five gold, eight sil­ver, nine bronze – in the three-day meet.
