Last year's Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist Janae De Gannes began her 2024 season in fine style. The Concorde athlete won the girls' Under-20 long jump at the National Association of Athletics Association of T&T (NAAATT) Series One at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain on Sunday.
The 18-year-old leaped to a new personal best (pb) of 6.25 metres in her third and final effort. The mark was achieved with a legal wind reading of 2.0m/s and was an improvement on her previous best of 6.11m set in taking gold at the 2023 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U-18 Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.
De Gannes' 6.25m effort was better than the 6.20m qualifying standard for the women's long jump at the 2024 World U-20 Track and Field Championships in Lima, Peru (August 27-31). However, the mark will not be recognised all Olympic and World Championships qualifying performances at the Hasely Crawford Stadium will not be recognised by the World Governing Body of Track and Field, World Athletics, following the expiration of the certification of the track on December 31, 2023.
De Gannes also won the girls' U-20 400m (59.21) and was among 19 athletes who attained the qualifying standards for the 2024 Carifta Games set for St Georges, Grenada from March 31 to April 2.
The Concorde jumper was one of two who got over the 5.42m Carifta standard for the girls' U-20 long jump. De Gannes cleared the standard on all three of her efforts. She leapt to 5.82 in the first round and then improved to 6.12m on her second jump before reaching out to 6.25m on her third and final effort. Second-placed Hayley Lynch of Memphis also went past the 5.42m standard with a pb of 5.74m.
Xiah Tobias (Zenith) and Omari Brown (Neon Wolves) also attained the standards in the girls' and boys' U17 long jump, respectively. Tobias' 5.44m (pb) was superior to the 5.42m standard while Browne sailed over the boys' U-17 6.34m barrier with a 6.39 winning effort.
Tobias missed out on qualifying in the girls' U-17 100m after topping the field in 12.30 seconds. The Carifta standard is 12.05. Brown also was shy of the boys' U-17 100m hurdles standard of 14.78 as he won the race in 14.83.
Kyah Hyson (FAD) and Akira Malaver (Simplex) dipped below the girls' U-17 400m qualifier of 57.54. Hyson came from behind to upset the favourite Malaver in the first section, winning in 55.89 seconds, with Malaver next in 56.33. The Simplex sprinter won silver in the one-lap event and gold in the 4x100m at last year's NACAC U-18 championships.
Aniqah Bailey (One-A-Week) and 13-year-old Oshea Cummings (Zenith) went quicker the the Carifta girls' U-17 1,500m standard (5:07.73). Bailey passed Cummings on the home stretch to win in 4:54.31. Cummings crossed the line in 4:55.44.
Reigning NACAC U-18 champion Peyton Winter sailed over the Carifta girls' U-17 shot put standard of 12.18 on four occasions (12.95, 12.88, 13.53, 13.54). She opened with 11.57, then got over the mark in her remaining rounds. The 2023 Carifta silver medallist was short in her bid to achieve the discus standard (32.94) after she topped the field with 32.45m.
Zenith's Malaki Cordner was 0.01 quicker than the boys' U-17 100m standard (11.02) when he ran the quickest time of 11.02. Cameron Powell of Phoenix was second-fastest when he equalled the standard.
Dominic Maxwell of Toco TAFAC went clear of the 12.61 Carifta boys' U-17 triple jump qualifying distance on two occasions with marks of 12.62 and 12.78.
Cougars' Isaiah Alder and Keiel Samuel of One-A-Week raced under the Carifta boys' U-17 3,000m 9:56.85-time. Racing among the men, Alder clocked 9:35.14 to finish ahead of Samuel (9:51.07). Adrianna Quamina surpassed the Carifta girls' U-20 discus barrier of 39.42 with a victorious effort of 40.62. The 2022 Carifta bronze medallist was aiming to get the standard (11.91) in the shot put but could only manage 11.14 to win the event. Carifta and NACAC U-18 medalist Kernesha Shelbourne of Oasics went over the Carifta girls' U-20 high jump standard (1.64) clearing 1.65m.
Another NACAC U-18 medallist Omare Thompson (One-A-Week) ran under the Carifta boys' U-20 1,500m asking time of 4:11.49 by two seconds winning in 4:09.47. Jayden Nedd got over the 47.73 Carifta boys' U-20 discus mark of 46.73 with 47.73.
Reigning World Masters 55-59 champion Gwendolyn Smith showed that age is just a number after she won four events on the day. The 59-year-old won the shot put (10.71), discus (27.15), javelin (32.33) and hammer (25.42).
The second event on the local track and field calendar is the Mercury Season Ignition Meet at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago on January 14 from 10 am.
