Caribbean Airlines benefited greatly from West Indies cricket in the past five years. Cricket West Indies President Dr Kishore Shallow was delivering the feature address at the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board awards at the National Cycling Centre on Sunday (October 5) when he said cricket and sports, by extension, have and will continue to benefit governments and businesses across the Caribbean.
Shallow said, “Your own Caribbean Airlines, on average over the last five years, has earned annually US $5 million dollars from Cricket West Indies.”
Despite this, he lamented that the airline has not given back to the sport. “We haven’t enjoyed the benefit of a partnership with Cal, not even a sponsorship for your programme. But that is just one example of how the corporate community benefits from Cricket and Cricket West Indies.”
Dr Shallow, who handed out awards to winners, including Jason Mohammed, who was named National Cricketer of the Year, praised the national and territorial boards for the hard work they have been doing administratively.
Shallow noted the regional board is looking to work with the boards to advance West Indies cricket further.
“Through our strategic plan 2024 to 2027, we are committed to working hand-in-hand with every single territorial board, every single club through the territorial boards, so that we can continue to create opportunities, strengthen structures, and put in place systems to ensure a sustainable and competitive future of cricket in the Caribbean,” Shallow said.
Among those honoured at the ceremony, Jayden Seales, who led the West Indies attack with 27 wickets from seven Tests between November last year against Bangladesh and India last week, with an average of 20.39, was named International Cricketer of the Year.
On the women’s side, Karishma Ramharack was named the International Cricketer of the Year, while Lee-Ann Kirby was named the Premiership Player of the Year. Shania Augustus was named the Championship Player of the Year.
Woodland Sports Club was named the Club of the Year.
National Under-19 cricketer and former national Under-17, and Under-15 captain, Brendon Boodoo, was named Best Youth Player.
