Crowd favourites, Drifters captured the $8,000 Tyro Sports Club 45 and Over (10 overs) Windball League title when they defeated fierce rival Ansa Motors Team Anthrax by six wickets in the 'Big Six' final at the Gabba Ground, Bourg Mulatresse, Lower Santa Cruz on Sunday.
Batting first, regular-season table-toppers Ansa Motors Team Anthrax were limited to a modest 55 runs for loss of seven wickets from their ten overs at the crease with Earlan Williams hitting a top score of 15 runs while Marlon Him bagged two wickets for four runs from his two overs and Andy Ruiz, one wicket for eight runs.
In their run chase, Monteco Drifters got to their target of 60 for the loss of four wickets with one over remaining despite the superb bowling figures of three wickets for six runs from Antonio Samlal.
The win for Drifters over Team Anthrax in the final was the second in succession for the season after losing their round-robin league decider.
Team Anthrax snapped up the $2,000 regular-season winner’s prize when they defeated Monteco Drifters in the top-of-the-table clash by 22 runs to end the 12-team round-robin phase with a perfect record of 11 wins from as many matches for a maximum of 33 points, while Monteco Drifters ended in the second spot with a 10-1 record and 30 points.
However, when both teams faced off in the ‘Big Six’ semifinals, ANSA Motors Team Anthrax again had first turn at the crease and amassed a challenging total of 93 runs for the loss of six wickets, only for Drifters to reach their target 97 for the loss of only one wicket.
For the title win, Drifters took home $8,000, while Team Anthrax got $3,000, and in the third placed battle Bluffuzz beat Overcomers by 18 runs to take away $1,700 to their opponents $1,500.
