England won the ICC World Cup for the first time with a dramatic win in a Super Over at Lord's, London, Sunday.
Martin Guptill could not get a yorker from rookie pacer Jofra Archer away to the boundary and was run out by wicket-keeper Jos Buttler going for the second run the Kiwis needed to spark wild celebrations amongst the England players on the field and in the stands.
The World Cup title was England's first in their fourth chance in a final and they needed the first-ever Super Over in the 44-year-old competition's history to do it, after New Zealand restricted them to exactly 241 all out in their 50 overs, the same score as the Kiwis managed for eight wickets in their first turn at the crease.
Ben Stokes (84*) and Buttler (59) had kept England on course for the title in the regulation 50 overs with half-centuries but once Buttler (55) was out the Kiwis, also seeking their first-ever title, regained the momentum and forced the tie.
In the Super Over, both teams also scored 15 runs each but England won by virtue of scoring more boundaries in regulation play.
Stokes and Buttler were again England's chosen pair for the do-or-die over and they compiled 15 runs with two fours off veteran Kiwi pacer Trent Boult.
New Zealand's Jimmy Neesham and Guptill also struck 15 off Archer but England won courtesy of scorer more boundaries during normal play - a count of 26 to 17.
SUMMARISED SCORES:
NEW ZEALAND 241-8 (50) (Henry Nicholls 55, Tom Latham 47, Chris Woakes 3/37, Liam Plunkett 3/42) v ENGLAND 214 all out (50) (Ben Stokes 84*, JOS BUTTLER 59, Jimmy Neesham 3/43, Lockie Ferguson 3/50)
Result: Match tied (England won Super Over Eliminator)
