German-born, T&T striker Keenon Erfuth and Denmark-based Marc Gangia have earned call-ups from national coach Angus Eve as part of a 35-man squad for a training camp to be held from February 5-8 at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima.
The camp comprises mostly home-based players and will serve as preparations for the upcoming Copa America Play-In versus Canada to take place in Frisco, Texas in March.
Erfuth’s mother is Trinidadian while Gangia has earned the right to represent T&T through his father.
Gangia is a 26-year-old forward for Dalum IF and Erfuth is a 21-year-old forward for VfR Neumünster, a German association football club based in Neumünster, Schleswig-Holstein.
Eve’s camp features several members of the squad that made it through to the Concacaf Nations League quarter-finals, such as goalkeeper Denzil Smith, Justin Garcia, Real Gill, Kevon Goddard Reon Moore, Duane Muckette, Michel Poon-Angeron, Ross Russell Jr, Alvin Jones and Christopher Biggette.
There were also recalls for John-Paul Rochford, Adrian Foncette, Kaihim Thomas, Brent Sam, Jamal Jack, and Isaiah Lee. Eve’s charges missed out on a Nations League semifinal spot, as well as automatic qualification to the Copa America Cup later this year, when they went down 4-2 to the United States on aggregate, following a 3-0 loss at the Q2 Stadium and a 2-1 victory for them four days later at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on November 20.
Eve is now keen to get back on the training pitch for the first time since his team’s 2-1 triumph.
“It’s a great chance for us to get some of the guys together as a group again because as you would have seen, the majority of them would have returned to their clubs and have been very active in the local league since November,” Eve said.
“There are few regulars in this squad but we also took the opportunity to invite some players who we believe have been showing up and performing for their clubs in the Local Premier League.”
“There is a lot of international football coming up with the Copa America qualifier being the most urgent assignment, but of course, there are the World Cup qualifiers following soon after in June. These sort of windows, where we can have some time with the players available, are extremely important for us,” Eve noted.
The team will first face the country’s under-20 team in a friendly match soon.
