Goal-shooter Simone Morgan sizzled over the weekend in leading Fire Services to the Premiership Division Fast5 title in the Courts All Sectors Netball League at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua.
The former national goal-shooter combined with national defender Onella Jack-Hill in the shooting circle to help their team play unbeaten through the tournament to take the crown, beating Las Lomas, 33-11 on Sunday.
Fast5 (originally called Fastnet) is a variation of netball featuring shortened games and goals worth multiple points. Each side only has five players on the court, compared with seven in normal netball competition. Each team can separately nominate one "power play" quarter, in which each goal scored by that team counts for double points. The goal-shooter and goal-attack may shoot goals from outside the shooting circle. These goals count for two points if scored from inside the outer zone and three points if scored in the super shot zone; in a power-play quarter, they would count for four and six points respectively.
The six teams in the division competed in the double-elimination tournament in which the winner of the losing side plays the winner of the winning side in the final. Substitutions were unlimited and could be made at any time.
Coincidentally, Fire and Las Lomas met in the opening round and it was the firewoman prevailing, 35-14, to advance in the winners' bracket. The loss sent Las Lomas to the losers' bracket where it met Police in the first round on Sunday and won 18-8. Later, Las Lomas took on Defence Force in the bracket's semifinal and progressed to the finale with an 18-8 victory. Shooting for Las Lomas were Raquel Russell, Keon Russell and Emmanuel Russell.
On the other end, Fire, which finished as the runner-up last season, eased past Police (15-4) and then battled past defending champion Police Youth Club (PYC), 17-13, to make it to the title-match where Morgan showed her ability at long-range shooting in the high-intensity competition.
Fast5 competitions were held in the other three division of the league.
TSTT was crowned the champion in both the Championship and Retro categories while Bermudez won the Alternative group.
In the Championship Division, TSTT with its main shooters being Chantael Perry McEwen, Kanika Paul-Payne and Sophia Harper defeated Jabloteh in the final, 12-8. The main shooters for Jabloteh were Zakiya Mc Kenna, Simone Bartholomew and Giselle Hobson.
In the Alternative Division, Bermudez, thanks to shooters Nicola Alleyne, Shanequa Griffith and Nicola Solomon, bounced back from an opening round loss (24-6) to the Unversity of the West Indies (UWI) 'X' to be position in the losers' bracket, to reach the final and defeat PYC, 16-12.
For TSTT, which played unbeaten throughout the Retro competition courtesy the shooting of Denise Rose and Debra Alie, beat Jabloteh 20-6 in the final.
