T&T senior footballers suffered a 3-0 loss to host Panama at the Rommel Fernandez Stadium, Panama City, on Tuesday, as they continued their preparations for the Digicel Caribbean Cup Second Round qualifiers at home in November. Following last month's 3-1 home defeat to the Jamaica Reggae Boyz, coach Russell Latapy was hoping for a better showing from his all locally-based professional line-up. However, T&T again started off poorly and produced a terrible display, particularly in the first 45 minutes. Interim Panama coach, Jorge Dely left many of his regular players on the bench, as he looked at new faces for next year's Central American Championship.
T&T goalkeeper, Jan-Michael Williams was called into action as early as the ninth minute as he saved a penalty after he brought down Edwin Aguilar in the box, after the striker beat T&T's off-side trap. But Panama's disappointment did not last long as five minutes later, the host which had only three wins in 12 previous meetings with the Soca Warriors, took the lead via Aguilar. He turned in the box beating defenders Daniel Cyrus and Aklie Edwards while leaving goalkeeper Williams for dead as he placed his shot in the top far corner for a 1-0 lead. There wasn't much action to report from T&T during the first half period, apart from a 16th minute Kern Cupid free-kick which sailed over the bar; and some darting runs by one of T&T's hardworking midfielder Kevon Carter, who teamed-up well with his Defence Force teammate Devon Jorsling.
Late in the first-half, Edwards came the closest to scoring an own goal as he tried to clear a through pass from Aguilar to Torres on the flank. On the resumption, Latapy's men started with a little more purpose and should have equalised in the 57th minute when left back Joevin Jones, who replaced Edwards at the interval, sent in a perfect cross from the left only for Jason Marcano to head the ball high overbar. Evergreen striker, Luis Tejada entered the match in the 67th for Panama and it took him only eight minutes to find the back of the net when he scored from a defensive error in the 75th. Defender Roman Torres toyed with the T&T defence, which failed to clear the ball in the box, before Tejada latched onto it and slapped his shot pass substitute goalkeeper Marvin Phillip.
Gabriel Gomez closed the door on T&T from the penalty spot in the 87th after Cyrus, a former T&T Under-20 defender, was wrongly accused for pushing one of the Panamanian attackers in the box. Cyrus was subsequently yellow carded while Gomez made no mistake this time with a cheap chip past Phillip. In the 91st minute, T&T would get one last chance at goal when Trent Noel almost knocked-out the Panamanian goalkeeper, Jose Calderon with a powerful free-kick.
The Soca Warriors will now move to Belize to take on the home side (ranked 180th by Fifa) in another friendly match tomorrow in Belmopan, from 8 pm. They are also scheduled to play Antigua & Barbuda (September 17), St Lucia (September 21), Guyana (September 26), Bermuda (October 6) and four days later a return match with Jamaica in Kingston.
