Though it's hard to see her as anything else but a woman of substance, national midfielder and captain Karyn Solange Forbes is intent on helping many women, young and old, with life through her book 'Woman of Substance.'
At her book launch at La Chateau Gardens, Mt Pleasant on Saturday evening before a gathering of football colleagues, family, friends and well-wishers, Forbes said her book will be the first of many as she commits to making easier the lives of many who may need it, through her God and saviour.
Her book was written because of the challenges she endured while growing up. From a very tender age, her mother sold cigarettes and paper to send her to school. And while it did not fit into a lifestyle they had carved out for themselves as being believers in God, Forbes said she praised her mother nonetheless, for providing her with, not what she wanted but what she needed most of all.
Being one of three sisters, the woman who is known affectionately as 'Baby' in football, said she tried without success to make her mother proud at Common Entrance, now SEA. But it was her talent in football that came to her rescue when she did not get the school she desired then.
"It was football that got me into Signal Hill Secondary Comprehensive. Now I am aiming for greatness, I am claiming it," Forbes said. She left an indelible mark on the football stage at the Secondary School Football League (SSFL) and sought to further her studies and footballing desires at West Texas A&M University in the United States where she scored seven times in 42 appearances.
In 2019 she represented Fjarðab/Höttur/Leiknir in Iceland and netted twice in 12 matches, but now at 30 years, she is a key piece of Kenwyne Jones' puzzle on the national women's team that will be seeking FIFA World Cup qualification in February.
As a devout Christian, she believes her desire to help others is a result of a divine purpose.
Because of this, she willingly distributed free copies of her book to women who needed it at the launch, saying she is here to share and give. Forbes' quiet life as a person outside of football has been a mystery to many but fans and supporters will have the opportunity to know a lot more for a price of $150.
Besides her rugged look on the pitch, Forbes is a baby striving for womanhood.
