France-based Chloe Fraser and Malik Gopaul, both of Crusaders were crowned champions of their respective Under-19 Girls and Boys Singles Division when the T&T Table Tennis Association Arawak-sponsored Junior Silver Bowl Table Tennis Tournament ended on Sunday.
The two-day tournament featuring the top T&T players which served off on Saturday was held at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua.
The 16-year-old Fraser, a recent gold (Girls U-17 Singles) and silver (Girls U-19 Singles) medal winner at the World Table Tennis Youth Contender Tournament in Caracas, Venezuela last week scolded Jannah Mohammed 11-3, 11-3, 11-1 to take the crown.
Fraser served off the main draw by spanking Jinai Samuel 11-1, 11-3, 11-5 in the quarterfinals and Jordan Thong 10-12, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6 in the semifinals while Mohammed won against Jerisse Elder 11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9 and Lyllana Boodhan 11-7, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9.
In the group phase, Fraser was also in ominous form as she brushed aside Jinique Subero-Noreiga 11-1, 11-3, 11-3 and Sophia Singh 11-3, 11-4, 11-6 in Group Four, and Mohammed sealed top spot in Group Two after beating Samuel 15-13, 4-11, 13-11, 10-12, 11-7 and Makeisha Lewis 11-6, 9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9.
Fraser also paired with Elder to capture Girls U-19 Doubles with wins over Thong and Samuel 11-6, 11-8, 11-3; Celine Grannum and Myers 11-1, 11-3, 11-2, and Elizabeth Rajah and Jannah Mohammed 11-6, 11-1, 11-5.
Gopaul, who spent the last two years training and playing in France as well, but has since returned home had a much tougher outing in the Boys U-19 Singles championship match before triumphing Ameer Mohammed of the University of T&T (UTT), 7-11, 11-5, 11-9, 12-10.
Earlier on Gopaul got wins over Kymani Holder 7-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 in the last-16 followed by Joshua Bhim 11-4, 11-5, 11-6 in the quarterfinals, and Sekel Mc Intosh 11-8, 11-3, 11-7 in the semifinals.
On the other side of the draw, Mohammed humbled Jonathan Alleyne 11-8, 11-7, 11-4; Jonathan Cottoy 11-4, 11-3, 13-11, and Josiah Joseph 10-12, 14-12, 4-11, 11-6, 11-6 in the last-16, quarterfinals and semifinals respectively.
Gopaul had won his lone match in Group Four, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8 over Luke Govia, while Mohammed dominated Group Five, beating Holder 11-6, 11-5, 11-13, 11-8 and Ethan Mohammed 11-5, 11-4, 11-8.
Gopaul then added the Boys U-19 Doubles when he paired with Joseph to defeat Mc Intosh and Cottoy 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-4 in the decider.
However, in the Mixed Doubles U-19 final Mc Intosh finally landed on the winning side with Thong as they battled past Fraser and Mateo Mollineau 13-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9.
Daniel Bhim walked away with the Boys U-15 crown after getting the better of Aiden Noel 11-3, 15-13, 9-11, 7-11, 11-5 in the final.
Bhim was gifted a round-of-16 bye after which he ousted Ethan Mohammed 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 in the quarters, and his brother Joshua Bhim in the semis, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 11-6 while Noel also began the knockout phase with a quarterfinal win over Nirav Bassant 8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7 and then his brother, Aaron Noel 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 12-10 in the semifinals.
In the round-robin stage, Bhim (D) beat Jared Simon 9-11, 11-4, 11-4, 11-5 and Aarav Bassant 11-2, 11-4, 11-4 in Group Two while Noel (Aiden) registered wins against Jonathan Alleyne 11-3, 11-2, 11-6; Ajari Jackson 11-3, 11-2, 11-6 and Tristan Soomarie 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-2 in Group Four.
Rajah made it two singles titles on the day after she topped the Girls U-15 Singles five-player round-robin series via points-won to points-loss ratio after ending in a three-way tie with Jinai Samuel and Jannah Mohammed, all with 3-1 records.
Rajah secured wins over Mohammed 11-9, 11-9, 11-9; Isabella Myers 11-3, 11-1, 11-1 and Sophia Singh 11-6, 11-5, 11-3 with her lone defeat coming against Samuel 11-4, 10-12, 11-8, 9-11, 8-11.
Samuel also won against Myers 11-5, 11-1, 11-2 and Singh 11-9, 11-8, 11-5 but went under to Mohammed 6-11, 9-11, 8-11.
And Mohammed then beat Myers 11-6, 11-3, 11-3 and Singh 11-8, 12-10, 11-8 for her two other wins.
Rajah also topped the Girls U-13 thanks to her entertaining 11-5, 11-3, 12-14, 4-11, 11-3 win against Zuri Radge Coomar.
Rajah had beaten Hidayah Mohammed 11-3, 11-4, 11-3 in her semifinal while Radge Coomar slammed Gabriella Basso 11-3, 11-1, 11-4,
Rajah had earlier breezed past Basso 11-1, 11-3, 11-1 and Everleigh McKenna 11-1, 11-2, 11-1 in Group One while Radge Coomar overwhelmed Mohammed in Group Two.
However, in the Girls U-13 Doubles, Emma McKenna and Basso won their two matches to claim the title, 11-9, 11-5, 11-3 over Kimaya Richardson and Kimaya Chiddick, and 12-10, 11-8, 11-8 against Kyziah Dates and Johanna Lawrence.
In the Mixed Doubles, Hidayah Mohammed and Zayden Sagramsingh beat Zuri Radge Coomar and Samir Radge Coomar 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6 in the final.
Mateo Mollineau lifted the Boys U-13 Singles trophy via a come-from-behind 4-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-9 defeat of Powergen's Daniel Bhim.
Both finalists were handed quarterfinals byes after which, Mollineau held off Zayden Sagramsingh 11-9, 12-10, 11-6 and Bhim battled past Aaron Noel 10-12, 11-6, 11-6, 12-10.
Mollineau earlier topped Group Two with victories against Soomarie 11-2, 11-7, 11-1; Yash Maharaj 11-2, 11-7, 11-4 and Jaheem Sayers 11-6, 12-10, 11-7 while Bhim outclassed Trent Sampath 11-3, 11-2, 11-5 and Aarav Bassant 11-3, 11-5, 11-5 in Group One.
Mollineau also combined with Jared Simon to win the five-team Boys U-13 Doubles with a 4-0 record with a decisive 11-9, 11-7, 4-11, 11-7 win over runners-up Daniel Bhim and Aaron Noel.
Zayden Sagramsingh eased his way to the Boys U-11 Singles top spot via a comfortable 11-2, 11-4, 11-9 win against Powergen's Samir Radge Coomar.
This after Sagramsingh was handed a quarterfinal bye and then booted Trent Sampath 11-3, 11-6, 11-4 in their final-four clash while Radge Coomar humbled Ari Delas 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 in the last-eight, edged out Rivaan Basant in the semifinals, 11-5, 11-8, 6-11, 9-11, 11-7.
Earlier in the round-robin qualifiers, Sagramsingh won Group One after his 11-3, 11-5, 11-3 win against lone rival Delas while Radge Coomar conquered Group Three thanks to his wins over Damian Smith 11-5, 11-3, 11-4 and Aneal Rajcoomar 11-3, 11-3, 11-2.
The other Radge Coomar, involved on the day, Zuri had much better fortune in the Girls U-11 Singles as she went all the way to the title, topping off with her 12-10, 11-13, 11-8, 11-6 defeat of Hidayah Mohammed in the final.
Radge Coomar (Z) was handed a quarterfinal bye before beating Gabriella Basso in the semis 11-5, 11-4, 11-8 while Mohammed also received a last-eight bye followed by her win against Everleigh McKenna in the last-four, 11-2, 11-4, 11-5.
Prior to the knockout phase, Radge Coomar swept past Kyziah Dates 11-2, 11-1, 11-6 and Johanna Lawrence 11-3, 11-8, 11-5 in Group One while Mohammed made light work of Kimaya Richardson 11-5, 11-15, 11-2; and Ishta Ramdatt 11-4, 11-4, 11-13 in Group Two.
Samir Radge Coomar captured the Boys U-9 Singles title after he topped his five-player round-robin series with a perfect 4-0 win-loss record.
Among his victims, Radge Coomar of Powergen defeated Rivaan Basant of Crusaders 10-12, 12-10, 5-11, 12-10, 11-3; Queen's Park Cricket Club's Ryan Chin 11-9, 11-2, 11-4; Southern United's Stephen Myres 11-1, 11-2, 11-1 and Warrenville United's Eli Perryman 11-2, 11-1, 11-1.
Basant was the runner after he won his remaining three matches for a 3-1 record while Chan was third at 2-2 followed by Myres (1-3), and Perryman, who ended without a win.
Kimaya Richardson played her way to the Girls U-9 Singles crown via her 8-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8 triumph over her clubmate Johanna Lawrence in their decider.
When the knockout draw began, Richardson ousted Amvi Ramsoondar 12-14, 11-3, 11-2, 11-5 in their quarterfinal followed by an 11-6, 11-8, 11-7 win over clubmate Dates in the semifinals while Lawrence dumped Amira Kissoon 11-5, 11-4, 11-3 and Harley Ramesar 11-6, 8-11, 11-2, 11-8 in her matches.
In the round-robin group phase Richardson beat her lone opponent Kissoon 11-0, 12-10, 11-9 in Group Four while Lawrence topped Group Three courtesy wins against Kimaya Chiddick 11-4, 11-9, 11-3 and Ishta Ramdatt 12-10, 11-5, 11-4.
