Teenager Sole Frederick sped to the women's 200 metres title on the third and final day of the National Gas Company (NGC) National Junior and Senior Track and Field Championships hosted by the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain on Sunday (June 30).
Frederick crossed the line in 23.02 seconds (wind 1.9 m/s), a new personal best for the 18-year-old Simplex sprinter who came off the bend well ahead and extended her lead. Veteran Reyare Thomas (Abilene Wildcats) had to settle for second in 23.69 with Concorde's Caliyah Wallace taking bronze (24.44)
Frederick, a multiple Carifta medallist, also dipped below the World Under-20 Championships qualifying standard of 24.35 seconds.
She was among several junior athletes to steal the spotlight on the final day of action.
Raye sisters Lisa and Xenia won the girls' Under-17 and U-20 200m crowns respectively to complete sprint doubles.
Lisa whipped the girls' U-17 half-lap field in 23.24. The Track Blazers sprinter finished well clear of silver medallist Akira Malaver (Simplex) 24.30 and Zenith's Xiah Tobias (25.22). Lisa's time was under the World U-20 standard but the clocking was ineligible for qualification at the wind reading was 2.4m/s, above the 2.0m/s limit. However, she and Malaver already achieved the standard with Lisa speeding to 22.77 in the US and Malaver clocking 24.24. Lisa won the 100m on Saturday in 11.42.
Her elder sister Xenia took the girls' U-20 200m in 23.50 with Kenniyah Guishard-Yearwood of Point Fortin New Jets (PFNJ) and Alexxe Henry (Zenith) in second and third in 24.08 and 24.23, respectively. The wind was about the limit at 2.7m/s.
Xenia took the girls' U-20 100m crown in 11.57.
The Raye sisters are US-born with their mother a T&T citizen, from Siparia.
Kyrel Thomas of Cougars produced a strong finish to pip Simplex's Hakeem Chinapoo for the boys' U-20 200m honours.
Chinapoo led the field coming off the bend as he and Abilene Wildcats' Daeshaun Cole seemed to be battling for gold before Thomas surged past both for the win. Both clocked 21.17 with Thomas getting the nod. Cole was third in 21.18. All three were under the 21.35 World U-20 standard but again the wind reading was 2.5m/s.
Thomas achieved the 400m standard (47.65) on Saturday (June 29) as he took the boys U-20 400m top spot in 47.46 ahead of Jaden Clement (47.49) who qualified.
Janae De Gannes hit the World U-20 long jump standard for a fourth time this season getting out the 6.22m going over the 6.20m. De Gannes reached 6.50m to win the 2024 Carifta Girls U-20 long jump gold in a Games record of 6.50m.
