The John Leotuad trained General JN will go to post as the overwhelming favourite in today’s Grade One - feature event - The Carib Brewery Trinidad Derby which carries a purse of $300,000. It looks certain that trainer John Leotaud and jockey Kerron Khelawan will have their names etched into the annals of racing history, anytime after 2:48 pm today.
The unbeaten Glenn Mendez trained colt Cape Canaveral looks to be the only serious challenger. The Merlin Samlalsingh owned thoroughbred will be ridden by Ricky Jadoo who was aboard Top of The Class for this same combination when he won the 'Triple Crown’ in 2003.
He is expected to run a good race a but beating the favourite looks out of the question.
Mendez is double-handed in the event and the top filly Streaking Far will attempt to outrun the boys with Derron Khelawan in the saddle. She could run a big race but has been put in her place by the boys in the Midsummer Classic.
Harold Chadee's duo of River Secret and Blazing Gem, along with Glen Emmanuel's Blazing Gem round off the field for the 'Run For The Roses."
The Carib Brand-Diamond Stakes the co-feature event over 1,350 metres for Imported 2 Year-Olds and Over and West Indian Bred Three-Year-Olds has attracted a very competitive eight-horse field. The race revolves around Thrice Horse of The Year - Bigman in Town which is slated to return with Ricky Jadoo in the saddle for trainer Chester Roberts. Reports have it that he has trained well and is ready to outclass his rivals.
However, the impressive Shaffique Khan trained filly Princess Suri will be all the rage with Ron Ali aboard. Also in the line up is the Shivam Maharaj owned the trio of Stockyard, Nuclear Power and Onefortheroad. Champion Trainer John O'Brien has the in-form Pauseforacoors engaged and this filly must be respected.
The in-form Rocket Wheels which is seeking to land a hat-trick of victories for owner Narace who own the 'The 'Triple Crown" winner General JN could surprise them all by leading in a double.
