Seasoned local football campaigners, Defence Force, will play no part in this year’s Women’s Football League (WoLF), which kicked off on Saturday at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva.
The "army/coast guard combination" team placed second in the league last year behind Club Sando but is notably absent from this year’s 10 competing teams, reportedly due to a change in management within the T&T Regiment.
WoLF president Letitia Mora, who assumed leadership from Vanetta Flanders in 2024, delivered opening remarks at a ceremony attended primarily by executive members, as teams opted to remain focused on the upcoming matches. Mora noted that the opening marked another exciting chapter for women's football in T&T.
“TT Wolf continues to stand as a platform for opportunity, development and empowerment, giving our athletes a chance to grow and compete in healthy competition,” Mora said. “As we kick off this new season, we look forward to competitive matches, sportsmanship, unity, and continued progress for women's football across our nation.”
Mora also announced a new addition to the league, a Knockout Competition. This tournament will feature a "sister isle" showdown, with Trinidadian teams facing off against Tobagonian sides during a mid-season break. The primary league format will remain a round-robin among the 10 participating teams to determine the champion.
Before the new season commenced, the league celebrated the standouts of 2025. Defending champions Club Sando were officially presented with their trophies, medals, and a cash prize. Despite their absence this season, Defence Force members were recognised for their runner-up finish, followed by Jewels of Tobago and Tobago Chicas in third and fourth place, respectively.
Individual accolades were dominated by Tyesha Griffith of the University of T&T (UTT), who was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and claimed the "Most Goals" award for her 29-goal haul. Other top honours went to Nicolette Craig (Best Goalkeeper) and Nikita Gosine (Most Outstanding Youth Player).
Following the formalities, the action shifted to the pitch where Trendsetter Hawks took on the reigning champions, Club Sando, as the latter began their title defence.
